Post Shaft Prices
What seems to be a typical price for a new shaft? I have a bog hog lt. Their website sells shafts for $120. Using the search function on here, I saw around $100 mentioned. I called a local machine shop to get a quote for machining my own shaft. They said around 3 hours to set up the lathe and mill to cut the threads and keyway at $65/hr rate. This makes the bh shaft seem worth it but 3 hours seems like a long time to cut threads and a keyway? Is this on par or should I keep looking? I had a hard time just finding a shop that would do it/offer a quote. Most shops around here seem to only do production work and no custom stuff.

As a comparision, I found that bt sells their 71 inch shaft for $88.

So many projects piling up now....It's just time and money, both of which I seem to be running out of

my time is valuable, so all the time you wasting being a cheap azz, you could have been back and running already. To each his own, but i bet a bog hog shaft would be easier , simple fact it is made for the frame. And by the way Woodie, you been pretty stupid lately, maybe you need some pussy idk. Go research Bog Hog more Woodie and you will find they still are very much in business. These statements and words are not intentional meant to hurt or offend anyone, so please read with warning. Thanks, Bobby

Your time can't be that valuable if you come on this site, read posts, and then make useless comments.

I understand that buying a shaft from bog hog would be the easiest route, but that wasn't my question. I wanted to know how much people pay for a shaft from other companies or from local machinists. My time is valuable, but so is money when you don't have a lot to throw around. This is a project that I am in no hurry with. I have until duck season to work all the kinks out.

I am just tossing ideas out there for some input. I don't mind taking my time and saving some money on this project.

What type metal? Is it a hardened steel or plain cold roll?

For small Hp, 10 or less, Cold rolled 1018 will probably suffice. Anything bigger, I like to use 4140 pre hard turned ground and polished or 17-4 H1150 . The 17-4 is usually slightly oversized for bearings, so you do have to do some work with emery cloth or take a light pass on the lathe to get a good transitional fit.
