| Post subject: | Beavertail seals and bearing? |
How could I tell if my seal and bearing need to be change. When I run the motor a little grease come out of the top and botton of the shaft. Is it something easy to do or do I need to take it to the shop? Thanks for any help |

It is normal for a little grease to leak out the front and back from around the shaft. There are several ways to tell if a bearing is shot and needs to be replaced. Some of these signs may appear together or seperately. 1. Drive Shaft gets extremely hot. 2. Hear squeeky or rubbing noise coming from the place the shaft goes through the bearing. 3. Smoke begins coming out of shaft tube. 4. Drive shaft locks up 5. Grease pours out almost as fast as you put it in. Changing a bearing is relatively easy if you are mechanicallty inclined. All you do is disconnect the drive shaft from the U-joint and then pull the drive shaft out of the drive shaft support tube from the propellar end. Then you just replace the bearings and seals and slide the drive shaft back in and re-attach it to the U-joint. Keep in mind that you should always replace seals at the same time your replace bearings. Refill shaft support with grease and you are done. It will take you a couple of hours the first time you do it, but then it will get easier. I can change mine in about 15 or 20 minutes. |
