Looking at getting a longtail for my 1542 flatbottom. Wondering what is a good size to make sure I'd get thru some shallow water at a pretty good speed. I usually hunt 2 people with gear and about 3 dozen dekes. Let me know what you guys know. Thanks.
|

Can't go wrong with a 23hp. Although I see everyone telling you to get a 35. I use a 20hp and it moves a similar load quite well. |

Get the biggest that you can afford and that your boat can handle. I've had a 23lt, 25lt, 31sd and a 27sd and never thought to myself "I have plenty of power and I'm satisfied". |

define "pretty good speed". How much does the people and gear weigh? |

I'm runnen a 31 GDLT on a 1548. runs pretty good even with 3 people and gear. would run a hole lot better if i didn't have a worn prop. if you can put gas tank and battery in front and be able to float a 35, i would go with a 35. don't get me wrong i love my 31 but i personally wouldn't mind getting my hands on a 35. With worn prop, 3 guys, and ton of gear im getten 10. just me and gear (3-5 dozen deeks) im getten 15. |

What conditions are you running that you want a longtail? If your buying new I would consider on of the mini SD's, unless you need a longtail. |

I want to get around 10 to 15mph. Most of what I hunt is 2 to 3 foot of water but there are places with only a few inches of water that I would love to get my boat back into. The reason I'm looking at a longtail rather than a surface drive is to save some money. I'm only looking to spend $1000 to $1500 on a used motor. Any thoughts? Thanks fort you input so far. |

Well in that case, look around and buy the biggest you can afford. But anything from a 23 and up will work for you. |

I concur to go for the 23 HP on that 1542. I think the price, output, available mods in the future if you want to go that route, weight, reliable record, availability of Briggs parts and service centers, all make that motor a good choice. There are times when I wish I had a longer run, deeper water, bigger water, to go duck hunting and needed a surface drive....NOT! I like the fact I don't have to race, I am in a sheltered marsh primarily, skinny water, hard bottom, and the longtail shines!! I don't have to feel inferior and drool everytime Billy Boo drives by at 34 mph in the latest modded shortail mudder with the perfect camo, and mega watt stereo blaring.....well, ok, two more mph would be great. ![]() |
