I've never owned a mud motor or ever rode in a boat with a mud motor on it. But I would like to buy a long tail for my 15x44 weld craft. My question is what size motor should I look for? I know buy the biggest that I can afford but what is the smallest that I could get away with and still be able to plane my boat out with me (200lbs) my 2 sons (80 & 70lbs) and a light load. Most of the areas I run are 3-4" of water and a very soft mud bottom. Thanks in advance for any help. |

I forgot to add that I'm going to be buying a used motor. That's why I ask what's the smallest I could get away with just in case I come across a good deal on a smaller hp motor. Thanks again |

I've read nothing but good things about the 23 Briggs LT and that is definitely a good fit for your hull. Somebody stated here that the newer 23's do not have the recoil start only electric. I think on a good used 23 that would be an added plus- good to have if your battery runs down. There seem to be more mods available for the 23 than say, the 27, if you want to go that route. |
