i have a 1991 18hp Go-Devi and am redoing the upper and lower seals and the lower bushing. i was wondering if you can get away with changing the seals and bushings with out taking the prop off? are you are able to just slide the drive shaft out the bottom and replace the seals and bushing.

or you can disconnect the engine, disconnect the u-joint and remove frame from transom....Ha Ha... But I think you are over thinking the process.....

well i have just herd its a pain in the ass but we ended up having to cut the shaft off at the u joint end it was frozen and would not come off. shaft was shot any way so not a big loss. now working on getting the prop of but its much easier to work on no that its on the bench

It's easier to take it off when it's on the motor. Cut a 3' long piece of flatbar and drill a 3/4" hole in it about 6" from the end. Stick a wrench through the u-joint and slide the flatbar over the shaft. The flatbar grabs the blades and with a little leverage it come off fairly easy. Use nickel anti-seize on everything during reassembly and add this to your preventative maintenance every 25 hrs. You will never have this problem again.
