I found a 2001 honda 20hp mud buddy long tail with a galvanized frame the guy says it runs great the hours are unknown and it's only been used in fresh water everything is in good shape. The only rust is on the muffler. He is wanting $1150 for it. Should I buy it or wait on something else? It's going on my 15x44 weld craft. Thanks in advance for the advice

If it runs and looks good, that's a pretty good price.

That doesn't sound like to bad of a deal assuming everything is in good order. Run it before you buy it if possible, if not at least start it up and check compression. As was recommended in your other post I would look for a bigger motor for that boat, a 20 will work of course but you will not be happy with the performance.

That sounds fair. However, I wouldnt just take his word that it runs good, I'd demand a test drive before you pay for it.

Thanks guys. I'm meeting up with the guy tommorow. I don't think a test run is going to be possible but we are going to start it up so I can hear it run and I'll also run a compression test. If everything looks good I guess I'll have me a 20hp long tail.

No never owned one or even rode in a boat with one on it. That's the reason I'm looking for something used and cheap. I'm pretty sure I'll like it but if its not for me I don't want to have a lot of money tied up in it. On the other hand if I do like it I'll probably end up putting this one up for sale and buy brand new one

Well every thing looked good. Motor fired right up and ran great so I ended up buying it. The guy had it bolted onto his transom and it doesnt have a clamp on mount it is a bolt on style. I need a clamp on because I will be switching between an outboard and the mud motor. Anyone know where I can order one from?

My biggest dislike of a MBLT is the mounting bracket, there is nowhere to get a new clamp on either.

The easiest way I've found is to take the motor and up down pivot off the side to side pivot plate and then unbolt it without the weight of the motor on there.

One more question on this motor. What size prop do y'all think I should be running? 15x44 weld craft. Weld craft web site lists the boat @ 250lbs plus me 200lbs and two kids 160lbs combined plus gas, battery, and light load. The prop on it is about 8x4 but it's pretty beat up so I'm going to get a new one before I put it on my boat since its going to be awhile before my boat is ready ( painting and putting floors in ). And thanks for all the help everyone has already given me.

Yeah that's pretty worn, slap a 9x5 on it and go have some fun.
