get a beater john boat to start. the vertical ribs will catch on stumps and rob you of performance, but you'll get a couple or 3 years use out of it until you can find a good used boat made for your motor. just avoid stumps if possible and idle/power your way over logs instead of hitting them top speed. you'll be fine. $400 is the most I would spend, minimum 16 foot length.

and yes, the lt's prefer a skinny, long hull. expect 15 to 20 mph depending on hull/load, etc...

Gents,

Thanks for the comments. I will keep my eyes open for a used 16 or 17 foot narrow boat.

I got a 27hp Kohler Command Mudbuddy. I was wondering if a Tracker 1440 all welded Mod V would be to small and heavy for the Motor?

to small, most likely unless you weigh 80 lbs.

It may work if you are a little guy like me, you will really have to watch it when you stop.

Alright mighty duck I gave your four chances, more than most.

Start your own posts and quit jacking other peoples, and use the damn search feature! There is a huntdeck discussion on the first page here.

Can't help with that one, never been in a skiff. From what I have read on here they can be a pita and dangerous in certain conditions, and if you don't need one don't buy one. You could try posting this question in the boats section with a new topic, or pm members that have a skiff, like T-bubba.

some of the uncle J boats look more like a skiff than a jon boat. i will do a little google reading, and see if I can figure out the advantages of each.

thanks

Are you talking about a real South La crawfish skiff or the things they call skiffs on the east coast?

Woodiebuster

To be honest, I do not believe I know the difference. Not exactly sure what a crawfish boat is, but I did see the Uncle J boats that are pointed in the front, and look like what I believe to be a skiff. I am also familiar with the Carolina Skiff (looks like a fiberglass jon boat to me).

Looking on craigslist, I see where some advertise what I call a V hull aluminum boat as a skiff.

If able, enlighten me as to what is what.

Yes, that is a skiff in my opinion.
A flat bottomed boat with the sides pulled all the way together at a point.

The slick bottom boats that aren't skiffs are usually called a "bateau" if you ever come across that.

Really a skiff is a dangerous boat, especially if you are running across any open water or crossing boat wakes at speed alot they have a tendency to "bite" the wave and can throw a passenger out.

The size of the hull is what determines speed and stability of a hull, but they carry a load slightly better because of more surface area on the water to plane out due to the shorter "rake" or amount of height/distance of rise in the front.

It will turn just the same as a jon because "chine" or how the side meets the bottom of the boat determines that.

Use the search feature search.php and it has all been discused

Woodie,

Thanks for all the info, I appreciate it. I am in no real hurry to get the boat, and have time to research more. I am out at Fort Lewis, Washington for the summer, running some training. I hope to have it figured out and make a decision by this fall, and be ready for the coming duck season.

just to add - skiff vs john isn't as big a determining factor for speed as length of boat vs width. a skiff and john of the same dimensions will perform roughly the same. wieght of hull and load in boat are far more inportant.

the skiffs are swamp boats, purpose built for crawfishing in the swamp, the extreme pointed front deflects off of trees. get yourself a john or bateau type hull unless you hunt swamps exclusively. they carry a load a little better. the go devil boat is a perfect compromise between the two, as it is hard to find a bateau or john narrow enough to be ideal.

but I wouldn't hesitate to put that motor on a hull up to 48 inches wide either. look into gator glide as well.
