hey just got my first longtail..its a 20hp vanguard on a 15'44'' hull..well i put it in the water for the first time this weekend...i launched and started her up and idled fine but as soon as i give it throttle it bogs and sputters like it has no power...i pull the prop out the water and hit the throttle and it revs fine...it only does this when it has a load on it...rund fine out the water but as soon as the prop goes in the water it bogs...anyone know what this culd be?? trash in the carb? any help is greatly appreciated! |

double check plug wires to be sure they are locked tightly down on spark plugs all the way. This will cause similar problem. |

Could be one of several things. These motors show the same symptoms, but with several possible cures. This happened to me a couple years ago. I idled 2 miles to my hunting spot and 2 miles back to the truck. Took the motor to a small engine shop, and he said I had a trash in my high speed jet. |

try something simple - like making sure your choke is all the way in. I had the same issue - looking at my choke - it wasnt pushed all the way back - could be your simple solution |

My uncle is a mechanic and he's going to take the Carb apart and clean it...ill also check the plug wires...I messed with the choke while running and it didn't make to much of a difference but ill double check that to |

10-4 on focusing on the carb. My first LT was an 18 Briggs GD and that happened and I was no mechanic then, and I bought a carb rebuild kit and I noted down where everything went and I was very satisfied when I put it back together and it ran great then on. Granted my 27 Kohler LT today has a bit more complex carb but is doable. Let us know how it goes! |

I can do the Carb myself but just to be sure everything goes back correctly I'm letting him do it...yeah I have to watch because I have to help him LOL...ranger where did you get the rebuild kit from?...or anywhere I can get one? Thanks |

could also be only one cylinder firing, if it's not the carb. |

Check timing. If key is broke or timing is off, motor will run fine until it has a load on it, then it will bog down. Also could some of the other issues such as: spark plug, kill switch wiring, carburetor needs to be cleaned, also could be the spark advance module ( if B&S has one, kohler's do). |

Well guys I have some bad news...took the Carb apart and it was flawless...not one piece of trash in it..so scratch that...so I took my plugs out and they were very black and had wet oil on them..so me and my uncle took the head off to find burnt oil on top of the piston and wet oil all in the cylinder...he said I need new rings...what you guys think? |

Any idea how many hours are on that engine? My knowledge ceases where your uncles picks up! I only know the basics and what duct tape, bailing wire and zip ties can do to get me back to the hill. |

no i dont..the motor is a 98..the guy i bought it from said it was only used during duck season but im guessing he wasnt exactly telling the truth...i would have to say it has a good bit of time on it....it has also been sitting since right after katrina in 05 so the rings being stuck sounds plausible...im with you on that one cajun..he is a very good mechanic..he has been buliding all types of motors since he was 12...so i trust him and his judgement! |
