I just picked up a Dixon Seminole Bateau with a Kohler 27 and was looking for a maintenance kit. The boat has sat for about 6 years and needs new plugs, oil and filters. Is there a website that sell's maintenance kits for these motors ?? This is my first long tail type boat so I’m not real sure if a auto parts store will have all that stuff. I know I could get the oil and plugs from there just not sure about the filters. I also need a new prop and I know nothing about props for long tails so feel free to share your opinions on that. It probably needs new grease in the shaft as well, is there a specific type of grease that's needed for that?? Thanks in advance.

What brand is the LT? You can go to kohlers website and download maintenance and owners manuals for your motor, you can get the oil and air filters at auto parts stores or walmart, here at least. As for the prop go to the manufacturers website and buy one there, or check ebay, some dealers there. I just use a marine grade grease for the shaft on mine.

Not sure what you mean by brand? its a go devil Kohler 27 model # CH740S. Thanks for the reply's. i went to advanced auto parts and they had everything but the air filter. I didn't check for marine grade grease but i doubt they will have that. As far as the prop go's i'm sure the prop that on it is stock is any options for different prop sizes or is the stock size the best to go with?

The marine grease from walmart is what I use, blue tubes.

As for the prop 9 inch is pretty much standard for the larger engine longtails, pitch will depend on the load you carry. Most here seem to run a 9x6 prop.

walmart it is.....The dixon boats are pretty heavy (made of fiberglass) Its got a trolling motor two batteries and three storage boxes and a gun box. Not sure about total weight but i'll be lucky to hit 20mph with one person and no gear.

You've got a classic LT hull there, Jrock. I'm interested in Paul's alum 18' hull down the road, I bought a 25 GD LT from him some years ago. He tweaked the throttle for me and I was doing 22.2 mph on a 1544 alumaweld then. Wish I could do that now, but I get 20 mph on my present 1648 grizzly with a 27 MB Kohler LT (by myself). Although the 27 is generally recommended a 9x7 prop by the various mfg.'s,, Paleo is correct in that most of us have found the 9x6 size better. Besides GD, Ron Hill makes a decent lookalike prop, so does BackH20. Since your motor is a veteran one, I'd recommend synthetic oil and grease( Mobil 1 for example)- yes a bit more $, but I can vouch it runs with less friction and I have less grease loss. If Wallyworld can't help you, most lawn mower places stock the air filters and such for the Kohler. Are you near Lake Seminole? I imagine with the rains the areas up there are way up, we've got three feet of water in the Glades at present. Enjoy that LT and Dixon hull and drive it proudly no matter what the shorty crowd says.

I didn't think about using Synthetic oil but it makes since. My in laws have a lake house on Seminole...I haven't been up there since tropical storm Debbie rolled through but I can't wait to get this boat up there. The local lake's in town are all about gone. Jackson just had another sink hole open up and Iamonia is completely dry. Not sure whats going on with Miccosukee because they just drained it and did a clean out. The river's are all filled to the brim. I'll check out the 9x6 prop. My boat was a one owner bought from Paul in 2001 i think (still waiting on title). It was lightly used and only has 120 hours on it. Can you run a SD motor on a fiberglass hull like mine?

Out of curiosity, how well does a fiberglass hull hold up on a mud boat? Can you take them in the same places you take an aluminum hull boat?

I've seen some Dixon glass hulls down this way on the Big O and the owner I questioned told me that the composite bottom was real tough and he'd hit a few stumps and no problem. I think Paul designed them with this resistance in mind. He made an aluminum hull (not sure if he still does) that was also tough. Part of the idea of glass/composite was to cut down on the normal resistance aluminum offers. I believe bbb on this site runs a large Dixon hull with a 35 GD SD and spoke very positive about the shorty's performance. I don't see why a shortail should not run well on them. Of course Dixon originally had the airboat then the LT in mind when he launched his models. I wanted the alunimum one because I'd rather tinker with alum than glass, meaning I have found it easier to drill and add accessories on an alum hull than a glass one. Jrock, that rig looks brand new! I've always been fascinated by the stories of the canvasbacks and redheads on Seminole...good luck with the rig!

The duck hunting at Seminole hasn't been all that great the past two years. I haven't hunted it that hard but my brother in law does and he say's it just doesn't hold the amount of ducks it use to. I haven't seen or killed a can or red head out there but he has. Its just been too warm during duck season. Hopefully the weather will be better this year and we can put down some cans. Paul designed these hulls specifically for lake Seminole which is extremely stumpy. With that said I wouldn't run one into a stump just to see if it brakes the hull. Aluminum boats are probably better suited for running hard in mud and hitting stumps at a high rate of speed. I'm more interested in how the transom would hold up with 35hp surface drive motor on it.

I am hoping bbb can chime in, he's from up your way and has a 1854 Dixon hull with a 35 GDSD. I shot two redheads last season, they are rare down here, it's mostly ringnecks, teal, mottled, and an occasional woodie. I know north Florida had little water last two seasons, we've had plenty and this past season was really good.

I've got a '93 with a 20hp Kohler....slow isnt the word for it.

Several guys have short shafts on the hulls. I think Paul will add another brace for the transom. It will have a ton of backwash when you slow down and I think.....it slides pretty bad but I'm not totally sure. I've been wanting to put on on mine but I rather just get a new boat. Also several guys are running Dixon clones.....a group from Moultre, GA has a Dixon mold and they build a few heavy duty hulls. I know a guy with one and he has a 35 shorty on his.
