Post subject:  Too much Grease?

I just replaced bushings and seals in my longtail. When I started it back up the prop side got a little hot and a couple of pretty good size drips of grease came out. Is this normal?

Thanks Guys

I am very new to mudn but every time I start mine up after greasing it comes out of lower seal. Is there a zerk at the lower seal? Same seals you took out that you put in?

When I pump my zerk ;) I always am loosing grease at the lower seal. When I start the motor grease really starts flying. How hot is hot. Can you touch it

It is probably fine. If I ran mine out of water for a bit, even at idle, the lower seal would get hot and start dripping grease. Under normal conditions water helps keep it cool, but you will still loose grease as it breaks down due to friction. Keep an eye on it, if water is getting in then the seal needs to be replaced.

Ran it today and it seems to be fine. The level in my lubricator stayed the same so i guess im not losing to much grease...

Have grease gun, will travel! My GD sleeve bearings lost more grease, but my MB roller bearings do also. They all leak grease. It is true than you can actually over-grease and damage the rubber seals on the GD and the literature with the MB LT stated not to over-grease. When I pump the new grease, I stop as soon as I see the old grease slip out, not very scientific but that is routine. Now it is true that near the prop assembly bearing and also the top bearing areas will get very hot but should not be so hot you can't place your hand on it after running for a few minutes even out of the water. Really sizzling hot temps are indicative of seal replacement or alignment issues, bent shafts, and a host of other things.
