Post subject:  Home Build.......Vertical Shaft?

Hey guys,

I am a hobby welder/fabricator that built my 1st LT mud motor about a year ago. I have all the equipment and material needed to build a 2nd. At the time I never planned on building a 2nd but now I have the opportunity to buy a 16hp Vangaurd for $75 with no hours on it. The only problem is it's a vertical shaft. The guy bought it to build a wood splitter but has since went with a horizontal shaft.

My question is can a vertical shaft motor be used for a LT Mud motor? All I've ever seen have been horizontal shafts so I'm curious if this will even work? I had an old john deer lawn mower I blew the motor in by mowing the side hill of my ditch too long and all the oil drained to 1 side. I have to believe since they have added internal oil pumps in these things?

Like I said, I think the price is a border line steal, but don't want to commit until I know it will work. thoughts comments concerns?

Just to clarify, my thought was to build the frame and mount the motor directly to that, sideways, and NOT mount it to a plate underneath the motor like on a conventional horizontal shaft.

THANKS, looking for feedback.
