Post No power after greasing!
Last week I decided to be proactive and grease my 23 hp beavertail. The previous owner said he greased it once a year and I have no grease leaking lower or upper but thought it was time. I purchased Green Grease #2 waterproof grease. Before started I removed all old over flow grease near the ujoint and gave approx 15-20 pumps of grease to the shaft. I expected to see some come out of the overflow but never did. The next day I took the boat out and had maybe half hp that I did before. Motor seemed to be under heavy load as soon as the prop hit the water. Prop out of the water motor sounded great. I do not have a tach yet. After running for 30-40 the motor took off and ran like never before. Seemed to me the grease heated up and lowered resitance on the shaft. Still not a drop of grease any where. Ran the boat today and it never took off like the first time. Did I over grease it? Use the wrong type of grease? My next thought is to run the motor tommorow in the driveway with the grease zert removed and see if any excess grease comes out. Thoughts?

May have some old grease that has hardened any then you tightened it up with new grease around the shaft. Should have been greased more than once a year. Take it apart and clean

So by taking it apart do you mean removing the prop and drive shaft? Sorry for the dumb questions here but I have never had to do anything more than service the engine and keep fresh gas in the tank. Im guessing if I need to remove the prop I should replace seals?

i pumped blue waterproof grease in my sd till the old shit came out. the new stuff was considerably tackier than what was in there. strated it up and had the same problem. grease was way too heavy. pumped as much of that shit out as i could with some lithium grease and its just fine.

yea I noticed the tackiness...almost sticky. My concern is blowing a seal out by pumping different grease in. There is no grease coming out of the overflow at all now. With season this weekend the thought of pulling the shaft out makes me cringe....this is the perfect dont fix it if it aint broke story...x1000 if you dont know what your doing.

if yur pumping and there is considerable pressure then its full and yur risking blowin a seal but if there aint no pressure or resistance on the grease gun when you pump it then its probably not full and the pressure cup would be moving, should be moving when its full in the shaft
