Will a 35hp Long tail work on a 1644 with pods or is that a little too much motor for that boat?? Thanks.

Oh it will work , but could be sketchy , I'd be real careful on the throttle especially while turning tight.

well i see alot of guys with a 1648 with out pods running a 35hp. I kind figured this would be about the same seeing im getting pods. What if i steped it up to like a 1646 with pods would that make it much better.??

Why not just go to an 1844 without pods?

1. with a 18 foot boat i will never be able put it in my garage

2. I dont need that much boat i hunt 60% of the time alone and the rest of the time its me and another guy so it would be alot of wasted space.

3. I feel that the extra 2 feet would be alot more of a pain to to get into the tighter spots.

If you don't already have the boat, I would 100% recommend going with an 18' boat. I've got a 1644 and wouldn't go much bigger than the 24hp longtail I have on it.

If you are set on the 16' I'd recommend the 23 hp or so. I'll see 18-20 empty with a new prop.

So I'm confused.... 16' + pods is going to be about 17' + some odd inches. I'd rather have the extra lenth go to usable space in the boat than to pods.

The boat builder im going with only builds boats with pods built right into them. The pods make absoultly no diffrence for if its gonna fit in my garage or not what sticks out the furthest is the handle of the motor when the prop is turned onto the boat. With a 16 foot boat i have only a few inches to spare from toung to motor handle. so even a 17foot boat would not fit wether it had Pods or not

I'm a fan of a 1648 with a 27...without pods. But if you're set on pods have at it.

The decision im actually trying to make is between a kohler 27EFI and a 35 vanguard.

I don't think the weight difference is all that much.

I talked with Jake from back water and apparently a few years ago they did some testing for kohler with the 27EFI and something about now they have exclusive rights to that motor.

I run a 35 Vanguard on a 1648. No problem with stability or turning (saftey wise, Turning any longtail is PITA). I usually run with and hunt 3 people out of it.

I also fit mine in the garage. Had to cut the tongue to get it to fit and only have about an inch clearance.

Are there any specific questions you have?

If you can find a way to get a bigger hull to fit in you garage, do that. Don't do pods no matter what size hull. The 27 on a 16' is plenty of power, although an 18 will go anywhere a 16 will. the only disadvantage of a longer hull is if you get up a narrow creek and need to turn around. That all being said efi would be badass! (1842 with a 27 efi could be awesome!)

I have seen several 35s on several skinny boats. I can tell you the 1648 is plenty stable without pods. Pods did add about 3'' of draft on a buddies 1542/44 with a 27.

My only scare was this season. Waiting at the locks to the lake a big deep hull ski boat passed pretty close behind me creating a big wake. I couldnt get to the front of the boat fast enough. Made it out dry thank goodness.

I also have a mudbuddy 35hp longtail on my 16X48 shallow drive go devil boat and I love it. You never have too much motor.

I'm runnen a 31 GDLT on a 1642 and have no problems. Yea it ant a 35 but if i could i would run a 35. empty im runnen almost 20-21. when i hunt i'll have 2 more guys and gear. kills my speed but still don't have any problems. As much as i love my rig, i wish i had another foot or so of space and i wish it was atleast a 48. when i got the rig i thought it would be plenty big but i just wish i had more room for gear.

The only thing I would add to this discussion, is if you're going with Back H2O, the SS 59" 35HP LT might be the best fit for that 1648. I run a 1648 grizzly with a 27 MB LT and it is fine for me but definitely would want the added push and 3 xtra mph the 35 would give me.
