Post subject:  25hp kohler speeds?

have a 25hp kohler long tail on a 14foot semi v flat hull, took it out for the first time today and only topped out at 9mph. had 3 people and 2 dogs weighing in at around 660 pounds with everything we had. the boat was very stable and handled it well. it seemed very slow after reading some of the speeds others were running with smaller motors. the prop is a little rough on the edges but no dents or bends. could it be a worn prop or boat/motor combo just not ideal? I am new to mud motors and bought the set up used, just looking for advice. thanks

Yes that is very slow. Could be a worn prop, measure it and see how long it is.

Probably worn prop. That load in that rig should prolly be around 15-18mph.

from the center of the shaft to the widest part of prop right at about 4". I was running about 2900-3200 rpms at full throttle. what brand prop would you guys recommend? and what size and pitch would you recommend for running this setup?

Turn the gov up to around 44-4500 out of water, then take it back out and see how it does. If you need help figuring out where that is, you can download the owners and service manuals for free on kohler's website.

semi vee flat hull. If its a vee hull, that has a lot to do with bad performance. Post a picture of the hull.

You need a "flat" boat and a 16' flat would work 10x better than a 16' vee hull. A true flat displaces weight better and drafts shallower.

So 3 people and 2 dogs at 660 pounds? Are the dogs shit zoooooo's? Add the weight of motor and battery ya got a boat that's ready to sink. 14' boat is too small for that load. CB is right on settin the governor. Make sure when ya open that throttle the governor arm is pulled as far as it will go.

Thats WAY to much weight for that boat! Add gear, gas, battery(s) and decoys and your F'ed! I had a 25GDLT on my 16.6/48 and I could do 17, 14 with a full load and after the prop was super worn I once did 4mph with 3 guys and gear for 9 F'ing miles!! Burned all 6 gals of gas to!

How wide is the hill. That's a big load for 14 foot and the 25 kohler is not light.
