fixing to build a 13horse honda longtail. Question I have is what size DOM tube are you guys using? ID and OD. I looked around and there are lots of choices. I am going to go with the flange bearing on the top with bronze bushings in the middle and bottom sections. thanks |

1" id 1 ½"- 1 ⅜" od. Depends on how heavy duty you want it. |

i was originally thinking 1.25" OD and 1" ID. I guess the extra thickness wont hurt anything. I just dont want it to be too heavy. |

i did sift throught the threads that the search function brought up but there was a lot of conflicting information. This will actually be my second 13 hp build for me but the first one I just used schedule 40 pipe for the housing. I want to do this one right. The dimensions for the Sch 40 are 1.32 OD and 1.05 ID. My thoughts were that it was overkill so i was going to downsize this time to the DOM 1.25 OD and 1" ID. If im wrong please correct me. I appreciate all the comments. |

concerning the home made builds Is it cost effective to do so? When one orders or fabricates all the parts, purchases the engine, and assembles a mud motor, how much is saved over just purchasing a name brand mud motor (I am sure there is a wide variance concerning horse power and other factors)? |

It depends on how much you buy premade and how much you actually fabricate. I would say as long as you don't factor any tool purchases in you save roughly half as long as you fabricate as much as possible. Plus it's a fun project for the off season |

I use 1.250 OD and .875 ID DOM in either steel or aluminum. I want enough metal in the tube wall to have substance for the threaded accessories. I think that .125 wall is a little thin for threads. Mark F. Cheney |

yeah the .125 wall is getting fairly thin for threading anything into it. Im gonna go with 1.375" OD and 1" ID. should be a good compromise on strength and weigh. |
