I have a 31 hp vanguard longtail (believe its a 2001 year model and has 120 hours in it). I just changed all of the fuel lines, filters, bulbs, vacuum lines, etc. and took it to the lake to try it out. As soon as I put the motor under load in the water, it would bog down. I took it home and cleaned the carb and jets and the motor is now running pretty smooth, besides the fact that I have a little black smoke coming out of the exhaust and it backfires and has fire coming out of exhaust at high RPM's. Any ideas? I am running non ethanol fuel.

The backfiring would probably be your valve seats. As for the fire coming out of exhaust there is a thread about that on here. Use the search feature and find the thread.

Thanks for the reply and the thread. My issue is different than the one shown in the other thread because mine only blows fire at high RPM and it doesn't try to stall out at all. Runs smooth except for the smoke and flames. I'll check the seals. And no woodiebuster, I have loved this 31 for a while now. Just need to figure out this glitch. Don't think I could find a better working motor when it's digging like it should!

My old 23 and my 35 Shoots fire out of exhaust at wot. Even after I lapped my valves. Not a whole lot but there is a little fire.
