Post subject: | Looking to buy first mud motor! Help! |
I'm looking into getting one. it will be my first mud motor but with my boat being a triton 1652 heavy boat and it's a semi v and tall transom I don't think my boat would do good with a surface drive. So I'm looking at long tails. It's pretty close to having a flat bottom but has a slight v to it. Any suggestions or pointers or do y'all think surface drive is the way to go? I'm looking a 35hp only as I have a 40hp Tohatsu on it now but I'm tired of having to walk to spots I want to hunt after the water gets to shallow or too much grass/vegetation starts getting wrapped up in the prop. |

Ok. , mud motors love mud hulls , flat bottoms. . Keep that in mind and be realistic about performance . You might get there but won't be fast. . H Finn |

I know I won't get there the fastest and idc too much about speed anymore as long as it beats my 14 footer with a 9.9 on it it will be perfect which was why I was leaning more torward the long tails cause from what I've read they will get you through worse stuff than the surface drives but just won't go as fast that's why the speed doesn't bother me |

Look at a 35 GTR but make sure you look at the weight of it. This will most likely give you more speed. Lots of people love the long tails but I like the surface drive. Personal preference. |

I like the surface drives but I just don't think I'll get more performance out it than I would a longtail. And if I'm not gonna get more performance out a surface drive than I would a longtail than I'm not gonna pay $2k more for less performance. But I've been looking at the new backh20 35hp swamp longtail and I like it the most out of all the new ones. |

Keep in mind that most longtails work best on a 16" transom. You could always have yours cut down and reinforced if the boats worth it that I. Just a thought. |

Backh2o has 2 models of the 35hp they the 71in shaft and the SS which is like a 59 inch shaft. Yes I have a 20in transom so what exactly does the shorter shaft length do? |

It's all about the angle of the dangle. The best way to sum it up is imagine you are push poling on the back of the boat. The least amount of angle on the push pole the better leverage you get. With a longshaft your turning will be more difficult. I have a 15 transom so I am able to get away with the ss. It is at the same angle as a longshaft on a 20 |
