So I got a new engine yoke and u jont in for my 9hp gdlt and was wondering if the easiest way to put the yoke on was going to be to pull the motor off the frame? Any tips from someone thats done this that might make it go a little smoother would be appreciated |

I mount the motor yoke on the bench. I turn a sleeve the diameter of the crank shaft and long enough to hold the yoke a few thousanths longer than the crank shaft end. I then make a washer 1/8" thick and larger than the crank shaft diameter, I put a bolt through this washer and screw it in the end of the crank shaft, pulling the yoke tight against the end of the afore mentioned sleeve. This greatly reduces the fretting of UJ set screws. Then I mount the motor and UJ, sliding the drive shaft yoke on as the motor slides into position. I also secure this yoke to the end of the drive shaft similarly. Mark F. Cheney |

Wha? Alrighty, loosen old yoke on motor side, remove mounting bolts holding motor on frame. Remove motor and place it somewhere handy. Loosen your yoke on the frame shaft and pull the whole yoke u-joint assembly off. Remove snap rings and pound out the caps to the u-joint and remove the old u joint and yoke from the frame side yoke. Helps if you have a vise to pound in the caps of the new u-joint and install snap rings. Take your newly assembled yoke u-joint and re-install (use red loctite on the yoke bolts). Might be a good idea to check your upper bearing/bushing assembly while you have the yoke off, before reinstalling everything. |

thanks I was going to try doing it without removing the lower yoke, but I guess that would just make taking out and installing the new u joint a bigger pain in the A. The UJ is still good I just broke a tap off in the upper yoke after I broke one of the set screws of in it so I figured I would just replace the u joint while I had it off |

If you want to save time don't remove the motor. There should be enough room to remove the u-joint without removing the motor. Loosen all your set screws in your u-joint, use something to pry it off the motor side. When you have it off the motor side, then get if off the shaft side, the shaft can help you by using it like a slide hammer. When you have the joint off then replace parts and reassemble, I would take a file and file down on your shafts where your set screws burred it up. By filing the rough edges, it will help with reassembly of the u-joint to your shafts and helps if you need to replace any seals or bearings on your frame. Those burred edges will often cause your frame shaft to get hung up. Greasing your u-joint before slipping it on helps too. Good luck |
