well i just picked me up a go devil longtail for a pretty decent price. doesn't start at the moment but i think it was the carb being gummed up but cleaned it all out so hopefully it will start. its an older model (1998 i think) so its been well used. is there anything i should change/replace first? i already put in new spark plugs and i am going to change the oil and oil filter (which the filter doesn't seem to have been changed since it was new)

also wanting to do some upgrades like getting rid of the throttle and putting a break lever on there, replacing the muffler (which is all rusted up).. but any other ideas on things to get rid of and or replace?

Check/change the oil, check for any play in the prop, make sure she's greased up, and proceed to givin it almighty hell.

On this older motor, definitely use synthetic oil and I also recommend synthetic grease. Torque down the motor mount bolts. Change fuel lines. If older tank, check fittings and replace if necessary. Change air filter. If carb continues problems rebuild it- worth it. Run Seafoam or Stabil in tank. Back off prop, clean threads, apply anti-seize grease and get a spare prop. If necessary, a changeout of seals and bearings, including a new shaft, is a great investment. Run motor frequently to prevent carb issues. Wear your kill switch lanyard, get plenty of stick time, and have fun!

I was able to patch my muffler up by cutting off the bad end and brazing in some new steel.(I tried welding but is was way to hot for the thin rusted metal and it kept burning through) not the prettiest but kept me from having to wear earplugs when I was running it haha
