I acquired a 35 briggs and looking into what frame to buy for it. I have an older 1648 mod v. lowe jon boat with 20" transom. I looked into Mayhem and he gave me a great quote but not sure of their rep and he said his tall transom models aren't available till May. Beavertail gave me a quote of 1400+shipping still waiting on details of shaft length. Im also talking to backwater inc. They are working on a quote for my setup. Does anyone have any advice as far as who to go to for a complete frame to your door and your opinions with the shaft length would be awesome. Thanks!

Back water inc, hands down. Their set up is the best available. Where are you located? There might be someone on here with one that I'm sure would take you for a spin.

I'm located in SE Wisconsin. I talked to Jake from backwater and he seems like a good dude. I mentioned that I served a couple of tours in Iraq and he was willing to cut the price a bit(awesome they support the troops). Expensive but they seem legit. Firm believer in getting what you pay for. 71" shaft compared to 84" was my main concern. Jake says their 71" is designed for a 20" transom. So if I can be convinced that I won't lose any power with a 71" shaft compared to 84" then I might be wiring to spend the money..

First off, thank you for risking yer ass for all of us. I think there's a guy in Eau Claire with a SWOMP. Not sure if that's too far for you to meet him if he's willing. I haven't heard of anyone that didn't love the fact they picked up a swomp of any size. I know I'm real glad I went with them over the others available. I think you'd rip it up with that 35 SWOMP on the 1648. Jake is good shit, I did all my business with him and Larry when i got my motor. They are good dudes for sure and they know what they are doing. The frame is stout, the bearing system with the revo-clean system is second to none and the fact that there is hardly any vibration is awesome. Nobody wants jello arm after a long run. I understand feeling weary when throwing down the money but looking back I'm so happy I bought from them.

Thanks for the info guys. That's about a 4 hour drive for me. Thanks for looking into it though. I don't doubt the quality at all. Just interested if anybody has any experience running a 71" compared to 84" on a 20" transom. If it's not that big of a deal then I'm all in for buying a SWOMP...

Just curious who makes the 84" shaft?

It is simple trig. As the shaft is lengthened the angle at which the prop hits the water gets smaller. as that angle gets smaller the forward thrust goes up - exponentially , with the change in the angle. There for, with a taller transom the drive shaft needs to be lengthened in order to hold the forward thrust constant. Longer shafts on tall transoms are fairly common. Several manufacturers offer them for this reason. Shorter shafts work, just not as well as longer shafts- no matter what the height of the transom.

I tried searching for a post on long tails put couldn't find it. The guy said he had a 35hp ss on a 16" transom boat. He had the same motor in a longshaft on the same boat with a 20" transom. He said the 20" with the longshaft will out perform the other hands down

The guys at SWOMP seem like they know what their doing. They sure as hell know a lot more than me. I trust that their 71" will work fine for my boat. I wanted to make sure that i'll be at max performance with that length with the amount of money ill be spending... If everyone agrees SWOMP is the way to go for this project I won't argue. I just wanted some opinions. Thanks for the input guys!!

You're welcome. I think I speak for a lot of guys when I say you will love the setup. Hopefully you get it built and mounted before the ice melts so you can get out and tear it up right away this spring!

I ordered a swomp frame for my honda 660 and it is saweeet!!! Great guys to deal with after the sale as well! I am overly impressed with the motor and customer service is second to none! I've got the SS model on my 16" transom and the longer one they said is for the 20" transom! Great motor and great guys!

I just picked up my SWOMP 35 frame kit!! I will post pics when I put the motor on. Jake was awesome and had all the bolts in place ready to go. So far happy with my purchase!

That's great news! I can't say it enough, those guys at Back Water are class acts all the way. And they make a heck of a long tail!

Swomp , no question , if you run a longtail or are going to in the future. , it's a different experience all together. , I have ran 4 different go devil longtails on my skiff. , I was always satisified as I upgraded to a newer or more hp go devil. . I said satisfied because I was never completely happy with the end result. . Running this thing stock was a huge improvement over your normal frames. . Drive one and you'll see .

What's happening guys!!! Been a while since I've posted anything... I've had the swomp 35 out a few times now and have no major complaints. My phone read 20-21 mph with one other guy(no gear) and with the current. I've had to put 2 shims in the cav plate to prevent the prop from popping out of the water at wot. I still have to apply a little pressure on the handle to keep the prop down but not too bad. Nobody said operating a long tail was easy!! Now I want to fine tune the thing and hopefully get less draft in shallow water. That 35 is heavy as hell and the rear end does sit a little low. I have gotten stuck in the marsh a couple of times but that big block pushed us out thank god. So back to the question are pods worth it???? Or will they just cut down my performance and piss me off? Too many mixed reviews out there. What are your thoughts??? Maybe put some foam in the gas/battery compartment......

Your prop blowing out is a result of your hull being a semi V. I had the same problem with my Lowe last year. I had to to adjust my bump stop so that the prop sat lower in the water when the boat was static. With it set like this, it was harder to drive at slow speeds but at WOT the Cav plate rode just under the water and the prop didn't blow out as much. Hope this helps.

Stu is right. Adjust the bump stop so prop can sit deeper in the water while at rest. What you're experiencing now is the prop is blowing out because the bump stomp is preventing the cavitation plate from riding at the proper depth once you get on plane.

First time I had it out I adjusted the bump stop all the way down. I figure thats what the issue was but i really had to put some arm into it to keep it from popping up. After shimming the cav plate it was a lot better but still pops out if i dont put some arm into it. Im thinking one more shim will do the trick. I also wanted to ask you guys if you have your magneto/alternator hooked up to your battery/lights... Im always charging my battery before hunts to prevent getting stuck out in the marsh. Any thoughts on the pods?

I can highly recommend a frame from Backwater. First Jake and Larry are way helpful and they know more about long tails than anyone I have talked with. The engineering that goes into their designs is far advanced compared to other brands. If you go see them you will not be sorry. In short they have run long tails for a long time and designed their frames to be free from all the problems they encountered over the years. Larry talked with me fir over an hour about the design improvements of their frames. They down to earth good people.

Yes I have one already. 35 SWOMP... I had the cav plate shimmed all the way up and was still popping out at wot. I noticed if you distribute more weight to the center of the boat the prop will stay under water easier.

had the boat out for the second part of duck season here in se wisconsin. after we got done hunting i started the motor up and noticed it was vibrating a lot more than usual. when i got back home i ran it out of the water and could see the shaft moving a good 1/8" up and down. this is my second season with it maybe 3 hours on it and its messed up pretty bad. sent a video to jake on saturday waiting to hear back to see what needs to be done.

Jake got back to me and is sending me a new driveshaft tomorrow morning. Unfortunate but these things happen. The ol 30 mariner will have to do for now. Going to cost me 100 bucks. Jake covered the shipping which was really nice of him. I'll post some pics of the bent shaft when I replace it.
