Been searching online and can't find anything on removing an old prop from my MB longtail. Anybody have a video or anything? Thanks.

I took the nuts off and used two pipe wrenches.... One 14" on the yoke up top to hold it still and a 36" on the prop itself sideways to bust it loose. I propped the skeg up on a work bench and gave it hell.... It finally came loose. A little heat would have made it much easier.

Since the first time it hasn't been bad. I break it loose and apply fresh antiseeze ever so often now. What makes it difficult is the shaft is meant to soak up shock from the prop so a lot of your turning force is used up just loading the shaft to the point that the prop will give.

Which way is the bottom nut threaded...lefty lose or lefty tight? I'm assuming left. Will need some bigger tools and a few pipes. What's the yoke? The damn bottom nut is rusted pretty good. This should be fun.

the yoke is up top... the U joint. I put my pipe wrench on the bottom section of that. The instructons say to stick a screwdriver or something in the U joint on the back side so it doesnt wreck the grease fitting but I knew I would kill a screwdriver in a heartbeat with how hard I was going to have to get down on it. As far as the nuts on bottom, they are normal right hand threaded. get some good penetrating oil and soak them down a couple times a day a few days before you plan on doing the job... a little heat a few minutes before you spray them down does wonders if they are stuck that bad. On mine, a little spray and a hit with the impact and they came right off. I prefer Aerokroil spray. Stuffs badass...

my advise is if you can, clamp the skeg in a vise. it accomplished two things... Gets it up high enough to work on comfortably, and it holds it so you dont bust your ass trying to keep it still and put out on the prop.

I know people build their own prop wrenches out of flat bar or angle iron and this may be another alternative. I considered that. In the end, two pipe wrenches did the trick for me. one small one holding the shaft and the big one on the prop. And dont worry, you wont hurt the prop doing this. Mine honestly had one surface scratch on it that didnt affect anything. Didnt matter anyway. The prop was being removed to be rebuilt anyway.

Thx fellas. The screwdriver trick didn't work for me...tried that bf I came looking for help and twisted a decent sized screwdriver pretty easily. Most of my tools are for building and framing, so now I have a reason to go pick up a few new ones I guess. Looking forward to getting this new prop on and checking the performance of my longtail against what I've been running. Will probably piss me off that I didn't do it before this past season.

you only really need the most crude basics for this job... but I do understand, an excuse to buy new tools is always a good one to have haha
