Post 20hp go-devil long tail problem
im new to this site and new to mud motors .I just bought a 2003 20hp go-devil ,and its on a 1436 almumacraft boat and love it ,it amazes me just how far it will go . boat runs around 20mph with myself, and around 17mph with 2 people .My question was that the boat floats fine when at a idle but it just doesnt seem to get up on a plane and i have to hold the motor down to keep prop in the water when going around a curve is this normal? And when on a plain the back of the boat is barely out of the water ,actually if i lean the wronge way when im turning running wide open the boat will take on alittle water . are there any adjustment to the motor that need to be made? it seems like the motor is pushing the back of the boat down and the nose up instead of running flat.

thanks

Yes, bend the cavitation plate up. Only a little bit at a time. About 1/8" increments. That should keep the prop in the water.

WOW, you’re running a 20 hp on a 1436. :o Isn't the max hp that the manufacture recommends on your 1436 Alumacraft 15 hp and that’s for an outboard. A new 4 stroke 15 hp Mercury weighs 115 lbs, your motor weighs 192 lbs. That’s a lot of weight for the transom on your boat. This might be the reason why you’re getting water over the transom. JMO

I also have a 1436 Alumacraft but I have a 9 hp GDLT on the back. It's not a speed demon but the few times I've run it I've never had a problem with water over the transom.

I have a 20hp on my 1436 rivited jon and she runs just fine. I only get about 18mph with just me, though im #250. Like it was allready stated bend the calv plate and you should be good to go.

its normal, you just need to bend the end of your cavitation plate up!

I must of mistook that for a bad thing. What was I thinking?

But anyways, sounds like they gotcha squared away. Let us know how it works.

i'm running a 20 gdlt on a rivited 14/36. i dont have the prop problem, the guy i bought the from had a plate welded to the back, it's about 4" long and runs the width of the cav plate. the problem i have is when i'm turning at slow speeds and lean the wrong way i will swamp the boat really quick. i haven't had water come over the transome when i stop, or any other issues, except that rivited boats aren't made to run higher hp mud motors. i've had to reseat 12 or so rivits. i'm sure the oyster reefs played a big part of the leaking but with that much weight hanging off the back, it does take a toll on the hull. over all, i like the combo, super lite weight as far as mud rigs go, less than 500# loaded minus passengers. i'll keep running it until i finally wear it out or get ticketed for exceding the hp.

im in the process of relocating some weight in my 1436 to try to help with the weight issues. I have allready moved the battery to the front and want to move the gas tank next .I was wanting to know will the motor run with all the extra fuel line or do i have to add a fuel pump to get the fuel to the motor.
thanks for all the helpful info
