 Re: 9hp on a 1648?
It will push it fine it's just gonna be slow as hell. I wouldn't go with anything smaller than a 20 hp on a boat that size, but that's just me. I ran a 25 go devil on a 1448 for years. Only sank it once!

 Re: 9hp on a 1648?
The above post seems to have 2 pieces of advice: 1: 9 will go , but will be slow. 2: 25 HP on a 14 foot boat can get you wet! I'm running 13 hp on a 1548 and getting 12-13 mph loaded and 16 just me. It's on plane loaded but you have to make sure the weight is loaded right.

 Re: 9hp on a 1648?
Thanks for the help guys. I found a deal on a 9 hp gd and going to give it a try. Worst case I will try and resell it if I dont like it. I only run about mile tops for duck hunting. So I'm not to conserned about speed. It will be my first mud motor with zero experience with one.

Sounds like you have the right motor to start and learn on

 Re: 9hp on a 1648?
Finally got to run the motor this weekend. First time out I could only get 6 mph out of it in open water. Once I got back home I adjusted the governor screw and took it back out. Now I get 10 mph in open water, but I got to be standing more towards the middle of the boat. If I am sitting on the back seat I only get 8 mph. Next step will be to put a tec on it and make sure I am not getting to many RPMs with the new governor adjustment.
Does anyone have any recommendations on Props for it? Thought there might be some other then go devil out there.
all and all its a lot more fun to run then an outboard!

And put some weight in the front. Chances are you don't have enough power to get it on step

I believe you need at least a 16hp. If you're loaded down with hunting equip you'll be in serious trouble IMO.

 Re: 9hp on a 1648?
One of my favorite fables is the one about the tortoise and the hare. Over the years I have towed more surface drives, conventional outboards, and even an airboat, than longtails, with my own longtail. Must be something to that story. Secretly I want to go fast like every sob.

Now that I think about it, you're right! LOL I can't remember a time that I've ever had to tow a fellow Longtail.

 Re: 9hp on a 1648?
Dang right, I run about twelve miles roundtrip on a typical hunt. I enjoy the ride and out and take my time. I just get up a little earlier than the rest who come racing out too late. Even the high velocity shotshells are a lot of hype.

 Re: 9hp on a 1648?
My first mud motor was a 9hp. Had it on a 1432 at first then picked up a 1448 mid season one yr! Slapped my 9hp longtail on it the rest of the season and I got 9mph on the 1448. It was so slow but dam it I got there eventually and could still go through inches of water. Needless to say it was replaced by a 16hp the fallowing yr then a 20hp. 1648 boat 16hp is minimum! To get any decent get up and go your looking at atleast a 23hp
