Hello I have an opportunity to buy a 31 hp vanguard go devil long tail for a good price. This motor has a new prop and the seals have been replaced and it looks like new. My question is I don't see this motor listed on go devils sight. Why did they do away with it. And what years did they use this motor? Also it is going on a 15 x46 flat bottom. Should I get decent speeds? Has anyone had one of these or know of any problems with these? Thanks in advance you guys seem very knowledgeable.

Jeffro.

Great motor, a friend has one on a 1648 flat bottom and runs low 20's fully loaded. I think they went away because the 35 is the same weight?

Alright I bought this engine. It cost me $1500 and a 2 hour round trip. I put the motor on and grabbed 2 buddies and off to the swamp we went. The motor started right up and had lots of acceleration. The prop kept digging too deep so I bent the cavitation plate down slightly and that fixed my problem. Now we were cruising along at 22-24 mph. I stopped at a spot and we got out and looked around. About 10 minutes later we jumped back in and I put the choke on and went to start the motor. It took a minute but finally started and kept stalling out. I probably shouldn't have choked it with it being already warm. I think I might of flooded it. Has anyone ever had this problem? 20 minutes later it started right up and took us back to the launch. It's crazy how much power this motor has. I am 6' 4" and weight 240 lbs and it was giving me a work out. Also I was surprised how well it turns for being a long tail. I'm thinking I will replace the spark plugs and the fuel filter also. Any input is appreciated.

Great job , sounds like you stole it. You should not be fighting the motor , make sure the cavitation plate runs just under the surface .

Change the oil too now that youve run it. Look close to make sure it looks good. Cheap insurance to make sure there's no metal or gas/water in the oil before it could ruin anything. Sounds like you got a good deal though. Enjoy it.

Good advice guys. I do like this motor. I had it out yesterday cruising the swampand hit a log with the prop. the prop flew out the water like it should have and everything seemed good. I did notice a change in engine sound almost instantly. I went to give it a little gas and nothing. In matter of fact it stalled. I tried starting it back up and nothing. So we sat there for 20 or 30 minutes and I tried again and it was extremely hard to start, ran like shit, and was backfiring and I couldn't give it any gas. So i limped it back to the launch I was just happy to make it back. Once I got home I opened up the top plate and noticed the little rod that controls the choke had come off and it was just bouncing around freeley. So i fixed that. I tried to start it but it still is hard to start and sounds like a motorcycle now like it has headers! And absolutely no throttle response at all. I may have lost a spring or somthing on the throttle plate or i may be missing something. The prop spins freely as I start it. Everything looks good. I am lost.

Now that I had some time to look into it. It seems that I may be missing a spring on the throttle plate assembly. does anyone have a photo of how it is supposed to look? I have a 31 hp vanguard. The throttle was not returning to low throttle as i let off so i assumed something was wrong. Now once i manage to get the engine to start it runs funky and i have to leave the choke on and there is absolutely zero throttle response. i watch in the back and can see some plates and stuff move when i hit the throttle but the engine does not respond. I think i have to be missing something. I just don't want to take it in if it is an easy 10 dollar fix considering the closest guy to me charges $85 just to look at it. From the book that's for the engine i seem to be missing a spring but then again i don't know i am new to mud motors in general. If anyone has any advice or ideas i would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Well I ordered all new springs for the throttle assembly because I was missing one and the others were rusty. I put them on and she runs great again. I also replaced the spark plugs and the fuel filter. I'm just glad it is up and running again. Thanks guys.
