Post subject: | In Need of Some Trailer Help.... Tongue is in the air |
Yes that is right, my trailer tongue is in the air. On Friday we replaced the trailer tires on our trailer for our boat, went from 12 to 13. Went hunting this weekend, never took the trailer off of the truck since new tires were put on. Went to unhook the trailer from the truck this afternoon, and once the trailer was off the hitch, the ass end of the boat hit the ground, and the tongue went up in the air. I was able to get the trailer level, only by standing on it (I am 125 lbs) . We took on quite a bit of water this weekend, but once we pulled the plug, in theory all the water drained out so any extra weight in the back should be gone. . So, why is my front end in the air add my long tail touching the ground? Is there water some where I don't know about adding weight or did increasing the diameters of the tires change up the weight distribution on the trailer? Or is it something else that I have no idea about? This was our first time out in this boat and trailer (both used of course). |

I doubt changing tires caused it. Does the boat have a subfloor? It could have trash under it not letting all the water drain. |

Yes it does. Did not see any water in the battery box so I assumed that all the water was drained. |

Shoot some air under there to make sure there is no trash blocking the drain. The leave the tounge in the air to let it drain completely. |

Regardless of whether or not there may be some trapped water, you probably should have more tongue weight than that. If possible, you may want to either move the axle back or move the boat forward a bit to shift some weight onto the tongue. About 10% of your average loaded weight is recommended by some sources. It will tow better and be safer too . |

Does the boat have a hunt deck on the back? It could be full if not drained. Raising the axle height by 1/2" shouldn't make it stand up. Usually it's just the opposite from my experiences. |

Thanks guys. I think I am going to pull the winch forward so that way I can push more weight to the front. Still figuring all this stuff out. Never would have thought that beefing up the trailer would have done this. Owning/running a mud boat is definitely different than a bay boat, just keep learning one thing after another. |

Good luck. Not sure why it did that. I'm running an 18' boat on a 17' trailer and it still doesn't do that. |

That's not a bad idea (winching it forward), but there must be water trapped toward the transom. Changing the wheel size doesn't affect the pivot point (i.e. the fulcrum is still in the center of the axle)--unless, did you move the axle at all? seems to me the only thing that changed was that you said you took on a tn of water. Is there another drain plug to drain the hunt deck if you have one? |

I don't believe that the boat has a hunt deck (but then again I have no idea what that is) . I have a box in the back that holds the battery, the engine, and a raised area that is approximately 2x3. |

You definitely have some added weight in the rear of the boat of some type it would seem. I cannot figure out any reason why changing the tire/wheel size would change the fulcrum point in any great amount |

When the tongue came up was the motor turned around so the prop was in the boat. As soon as you turn that motor around 180 degrees, that motor hangs off the boat and dramatically changes the Tongue weight. Just a thought |

No the tail was at 180 degrees, straight back. |

Do you have pods on the back of the boat? Pods are square bump outs on the back corners of the boat to give more bouyancy. I have had a plug go bad in one and it filled with water. |

Yea I have a Longtail. Kept it in the water overnight and it rained, but not sure how much so it had quite a bit of water. No, I do not have any pods. |

Your axle has shifted forward. Sure all you changed were the tires? |

If the other side of the engine is indeed a floatation device and absorbs water, shouldn't I just yank it out? I am using the boat to duck hunt and we all know that those aren't the most ideal conditions and rainy. |

Yes pull the foam flotation out, it holds water and will weigh a ton once it gets water logged. I suggest taking an AIT hose and blowing up under the floor from the back like someone else said. Sounds like trash under the floor holding water. |

If I pull the floatation out will the performance on the boat be decreased? I am enjoying running in just a couple inches of water. |

Foam filled coke can or empty can, which floats higher and weighs less? |

Ah true. Thanks everyone. Will try to get this resolved tomorrow, move the wench and pull the foam. Fingers crossed |

It ends up that the axle did move, it just moved enough to grow everything off balance. Apparently when we had the tires replaced the bolts holding the fenders also held the axel in place. Thank goodness that I got it home from the lake, there was nothing to keep the axle moving forward or back... Only thing that kept it in place was the weight of the boat. Thank you everyone for the help. I really appreciate it. |
