Anybody ever had any problem with the speed advance module on a Kohler engine. I've decided that's what is wrong with mine-mostly because both plugs, both cdi's, and the carb are all new and it still ain't running right!

Interesting reading: http://www.lawnsite.com/showthread.php?t=331766

In your other thread you never did mention if you fixed your lean condition and checked the fuel supply.

I had a rich condition. New carb took care of that but now I can only get about 14mph out of it. Turned the governor screw and got the oow rpms to about 4k-that have me 18 mph for about 10 minutes, then I noticed it slowing down after about 10 minutes at wot. The rpm dropped from about 3k in the water to 2600 or so. And 14.6mph by GPS. When I shut it down it ran on for about 15 seconds then wouldn't start-paddled to the ramp.

And on the fuel supply.-cleaned the carb, changed water separator filter, cleaned the inline fuel filter, changed fuel line from pump to carb and removed dirt dobber nest from same, flushed line from tank, drained and cleaned tank. Replaced fuel with non ethanol plus sea foam.

Installed new SAM yesterday afternoon. Test run in the yard today-started and ran great for about 5 minutes. Ran the throttle up and down a few times. Didn't want to throttle down at first then wouldn't throttle up advice 2800rpm. Back fired when I killed it. Then wouldn't start-turns over for 10-15 second then sound like I hit it with a hammer and the starter lugs down and will barely turn it over. So I gave up and took it to a GENUINE Kohler mechanic. Oh and it still blows the fuse on the starter when you pull the kill switch.

Please post back the results. I'm very curious.

I thought there were magnets that could come loose in these engines which would effect timing.

Will repost when I get er back from the mechanic. Only magnets are on the flywheel. And they haven't come off or broken.

Oil was full. Not over filled. And no gas in the oil. Shop left a voice mail yesterday while I was working-it's ready but still don't know what or how much.

Hopefully it was something really dumb, easy and cheap!

Spun the fly wheel and sheared the key! Not sure when it happened because I pulled it and checked it before I replaced the carb. Said he did quite a lot of tweaking - carb, choke , throttle plate. And set the rpm to 3700 no load. According to him 3750 no load is the absolute max the engine can turn safely. Charged me $88 cash. It ran 17.9 on GPS with just me and the gas tank and battery after I picked it up.

Almost forgot about the kill switch-it was blowing the fuse on the starter when I pulled the switch-it was hooked up wrong. Somebody before I bought it hooked the kill circuit to the hot wire out of the speed advance instead of the ground. It was plugged into the yellow wire when it should have been plugged into the white one. Said the yellow would be used to power lights if the engine was on a riding mower.

Best $88 you could ever spend. Technically, if you would have pulled again you would have found it.

Sometimes another set of eyes is all you need. Glad she's up and running.
