New here and would like opinions if you would help. I am debating purchasing one of two small hp long tail kits. It's between the PPF Woodduck and the Backwater Swomp lite glider. Same price is one better? Any experience with either one is appreciated.

Lots of good talk around here about backwater. Huck finn runs one and swears by it. He's a sharp guy.

The backwater series are just a better product . Pm frank theTau , he has that same glider kit and can answer any specifics . If it was me I'd use the backwater if only because they have sealed bearings and the best designed cav plate on the market. .good luck

I just sold my 1 year old ppf to buy a Backwater, here's why;
Way Less vibration the backwater can be run all day without losing feeling in my hand this is due to a better coupling system.
No grease running out of the top of the shaft making a mess of me and my boat
Transom mount that has adjustability and is a much more refined design that allows the motor to be rotated 360* without removing a cotter pin and lifting the motor free of the mount
Transom mount that is way more stout and has no flex and attaches with four bolts instead of two.
Surface tracer cavitation plate that's adjustable to the point that my 4 year old can run the motor smoothly
The throttle control is way more robust and can be used like cruise control rather than requiring constant pressure on a bike brake or a twist throttle.
Backwater throttle is also a lot safer when turning hard right as the motor doesn't pull into the throttle and pin it wide open against your hand.
The weight difference is negligible-( notice ppf says approximate weight, why not list a solid weight rather than be approximate???) the backwater weighs a couple pounds more, bunt they also have sealed bearings top and bottom instead of bronze bushings. There's a little more meat on the bones- that's a good thing. I weighed mine side by side, the difference was less than ten pounds, but the fuel tanks weren't both at the same level to make it a true comparison.
The handle is a little bit longer which means I can run it standing up without hunching over like quasimoto
The revo clean keeps the weeds clear of the bearings on the backwater. Backwater also has rock guards available to protect the prop if you run rocky areas.
The motor part is separate, so you can pick your poison and mod it till it puts a hole in the case if going fast is your thing.
If you saw them side by side and ran them both I guarantee you'd go Backwater.

45th parallel, thank you, you helped me greatly. I was leaning toward the Backwater. It certainly seems like the research and engineering is superior. I will buy the kit but run a stock engine.

Like Huck said, I run that SWOMP LITE with a 6.5 engine from Harbor Freight. Absolutely love it on my little 1440 riveted boat! You aren't gonna beat Backwater Inc. I don't care if you're buying a propeller or a 35hp SWOMP. Their products are top of the line and cannot be beat. And on top of all that, the customer service is crazy good. They are very knowledgable and they build the motors they sell so they know the motors front and back. I guarantee they've forgotten more about long tails than most of the their customers will ever know!

I wanted to thank you all again for the good advice and info. I have ordered a motor that will arrive Monday, and Tuesday I will drive over and pick up the kit. I found a new10hp Briggs Vanguard online for $299 plus shipping. So I am getting the Swomp Lite Glider kit for 9-11 hp motors. My boat is a 1448 tracker grizzly so the 6.5 was not an option for me. I know I won't get any real speed out of the 10hp but for me it's about getting through the weeds into the backwaters. Just like the other forums I use, Retriever Training and Duck Hunting Chat, this one also is a great resource with good people who are willing to help.

Drove over to Freeport and picked up the Swomp Lite Glider kit yesterday and assembled it today. Larry and Jake with Backwater could not have more helpful. I remain very impressed with them and their product. Larry took the time to explain the engineering behind their design and it was clear that theirs is a superior product. Test drive tomorrow, can't wait.
