Post 1452 alweld mv 27 hp lt help
I have an alweld mv1452 with a 27 hp beavertail lt. I just added pods to the back. Ive have 9x7 prop. The boat really seems to plow water. The motor seems to really pull. Ive had several go devil boats and and have never encountered anything closes to this. Im putting a tack on tonight to see exactly what kind of rpm im getting. Is this the performance i should b expecting or shpuld i change to a different prop. Any feedback would help.

Did it plow before adding the pods??

My boat has them and it did nothing but help. In Longtail land, pods aren't always a bad thing like for surface drives. It's a bit of a different concept.

I have never seen a longtail perform well with a short, wide boat. I would try to sell the boat and get a longer skinnier flat bottom. Seems like a 1542 is where performance starts to become acceptable. good luck.

Put tach on it. Record gps speeds. Before you do anything major like sell it and buy a new boat.
Did it plow before the pods?
How much weight are u carrying?

Alex, unfortunately no amount of pitch, cup,or throttle cable stretching is going to fix the black science that has stricken duck runners boat. Longtails like a long skinny flat hull, if that were a 1438 flat it would scare you. Short, wide, MV, all things longtails don't like.

Murray , I see it all the time down here in florida because custom mudboats are rare. Most people go to bass pro and buy a welded 14 or 16 foot MV grizzly and are extremely disappointed with performance . If you don't want to buy a custom mudboat, buy a 1648 riveted flat bottom. Of course it will not last as long but you should get low twenties fully loaded, good luck.

Ive go devil boats before. I went with this rig to get away from the weight of those tanks.

I don't blame you at all Murray, if you are not banging on stumps or jumping beaver dams the weight is a liability. My 1648 Landau was 240, my 1542 is 200. All I run is shallow hard bottom and hydrilla.

I agree with 139, like a mofo! I know long tails like them skinny and long boats. And mod v is terrible. If you buy a cheap light flat bottom it works out better as long as u don't beat the boat up. My tracker grizzly mv 1648 was def a mistake! Shoulda got a cheap light boat for my 23sd.

10-4, to 139sst and alexm's posts. My 1648 grizzly w/27 HP LT is not ideal but gets the job done. Y might invest in a 9x6 prop, that is what I am using, it runs 1.5 mph faster than the 9x7 on my rig.If I could find one, I'd opt for a vintage 1848 riveted short transom (they don't make them anymore)- those weigh what my 1648 weighs which is around 400#. I am now musing on a custom hull down the road. Before there were welded boats, there were riveted boats and they did fine- rivets are not hard to fix. Actually if you add steelfles or gatorglide (there are other products like them) to a riveted hull bottom this will help greatly to seal the bottom rivets and reduce friction from running in the mud/veggies- this works on a welded hull as well.
My good friends have run real old Lowe 1648's with 25/27 Kohlers for years without any issues on the transom or hull...a surface drive would have damaged the transom by now. A riveted hull can well last more than a lifetime if not abused.
I would not give up on your rig...balance the load (maybe move the batter and/or gas up front), try a 9x6 prop, get your hull bottom slicked up, tweak the throttle to 4300 rpm out of the water. I would be very careful with three hunters and gear, ideally yours is a two man rig at best+ retriever.
Murray, I'd like to try that 35 on my hull! Maybe after the season sell the rig and find you a 18' hull to match it with.

GladesRanger, check out lowe boats website. All kinds of new riveted boats, from 1636 to 1852.
Their 1648 flat jon is only 275lbs and .070, That boat would fly with your 27. Murray, you should look hard at that lowe 1648 flat.

Glades Ranger - check out Legend Craft boats. I think you can get them custom built with .063 sides and a .080 bottom.
