Yep there is a lot of anal seapage around here. People talk out there ass a bunch. I call it comedy. I've learned quite a few things also.

Re: Newbies first post. Working on a custom build longtail..
I have built two long tails both have worked great and lasted many years, but i have recently purchased a sps longtail just because i needed a small motor to run in very shallow sandy river. I am very impressed with the performance and speeds im getting out of this thing. for the price it was worth the money and i dident have to spend 30 hours in the shop. im getting 15mph on a 12ft flat-bottom with a 6.5hp motor, and running in 6 inches of water plus the alum props can take the sand. You might want to check into them and save you some time.

Cutting, Drilling, Welding... Dropped my drive shaft off at my buddies for some machine work. Im taking lots of pics. I will post a thread of the project when its done. Unfortunately the water is still hard around here. I should be done and waiting for the thaw so I can test it out.

Re: Newbies first post. Working on a custom build longtail..
Just waiting on a couple things... I need to install my throttle, my tether kill switch, my tach, and paint the frame. other than that... I really need the ice to melt so I can take it for some testing.
I ran into a couple speed bumps. I had to make new linkage and mounting brackets on the motor for the throttle. I also Took the motor apart because I wanted to remove the centrifugal governor and switch it to a set screw style throttle stop so I could better adjust it.
This motor was used in a presure washer. The governor was factory set at 3200... So I thought. I opened it up and the governor was already removed. So I tore into it for no reason other than to get a good look at everything. I am not sure why the previous owner removed the internal governor parts but left all of the external linkage in tact.
In the process of taring the motor down I decided it was a great time to paint the shroud and gas tank (no more honda red).

Re: Newbies first post. Working on a custom build longtail..
I can save people agony from buying a SPS kit. Just take $300 and walk up to a pretty lady that is wearing really tall high heals. Lay on the ground, flatten your scrotum like a pancake and have her grind her heel into your sac. Pay her the money and walk away with your head held high because you just saved yourself from a lot of stress and misery of owning a SPS kit. Your welcome

Re: Newbies first post. Working on a custom build longtail..
Horrible. An aluminum prop=ass ache. They would last minutes. Shaft would bend also. Wooden bushings. All in all garbage

Re: Newbies first post. Working on a custom build longtail..
finished up the tiller handle. I mounted the tether kill switch, as well as the twist throttle. and after reading others suggestions, I made the twist throttle slide further up the handle, and have a nut threaded on the end. My intention is to weld some sort of handle to that nut so I can set the twist throttle and control with the end of the handle for more leverage.

I wondered how a twist throttle would work. I put a clutch lever on mine. Let us know how it works out

Re: Newbies first post. Working on a custom build longtail..
How did you get it to balance? Did you put the entire motor in front of the center point ( the transom mount)? Or what did you do. I'm working on one now...

Re: Newbies first post. Working on a custom build longtail..
One more question since I'm making the transom mount myself. How far up and down can you move the motor? As in can you get the shaft past horizontal going up and how far going down.if you could be awesome, could you post a picture at each extreme maby with a measurement of heights if that's not too much to ask. I'm trying to make myne as low profile as possible, but with the maximum amount of mobility.
