Post subject:  Go Devil pressure lubricator

Sorry for the noobie questions but this is my first mud motor and I am trying to learn. Can anyone explain how this is suppose to work.? I cleaned all of the old nasty grease
out of the cup and put some grease in the fitting for the shaft expecting it to come back up into the cup but instead the old grease started coming out of the seal by the prop after running it for a few minutes. IS this normal? Do I need to replace the seals? This is a new to me GD Vanguard 20

Definitely need to replace lower seals, might as well do lower bushing and upper seals while you have it apart. Its like 32$ for everything you need from GD. It's not too bad of a job but not something you wana take apart all the time. Download the service manual from godevils website. It gives you a step by step on replacing those parts and greasing it. Can't remember what order off the top of my head for the greasing process but you take off the caps for seals one at a time so you don't blow them out .

You need your GD SN when you call to order parts - required to order

You can get advice and even rent their specialty tools if you want
to do it yourself... Order the correct grease too while your at it as
their grease is a bit different from wheel bearing grease...

You loosen a bushing to relieve pressure when greasing the old style. The new style you grease until the piston in the lubricator goes 3/4 of the way up to allow for expansion. Your lower seal is worn. Check the shaft for play. The bushing and maybe shaft may need changing causing the seals to wear.

I have called Go Devil and need to get back with them on whether or not the shaft has play in it. Thanks for all of the help. After reading through old post it sounds like taking the prop off could be the hardest part of this whole job. I hope that its not as hard as some of the horror stories I have read.

Start soaking it with a good penetrating agent now , it will help with the removal , liberally apply never seize on threads before putting prop back on , it will help with future removals . Leave a little slack in the threads when tightening prop up. . It is better to have just a little play as a shock absorber . I loosen my prop several times a year and put new never seize on . I've had to cut props off that were stuck and learned the hard way .

Just to add a side note, when I remove prop, u go back with new washers and nyloc nut

Best thing for taking that prop off is to cut that damn upper jam nut off and the prop will usually come right off. Just order the nut when you buy your bushing and seals.

Every turn take a block of wood or a brass punch and a 3-5 lb hammer and smack the corner of the u joint.
This is only if you have the pressed fitting.
If you have the split yoke then disregard this entire post.
