 Re: Canoe long tail
I would not use anything heavier Than a weedwhacker on a sidemount. On a square stern like my Gheenoe a regular longtail like a 6.5 GDLT is ok

 Re: Canoe long tail
I had a longtail on my 17ft flat-back canoe and it was more of a pan in the ass then anything. I found a cheap 12ft flat bottom and put the same swamp runner 6.5hp on it and it will go anywhere and im getting 14mph with me and a dog. If you do put it on your canoe make some side supports.

 Re: Canoe long tail
Buy another canoe and put your longtail between them.

 Re: Canoe long tail
I have square back canoe. I did make one out of a weed wacker but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I was thinking about making one out of a 3.5hp I have. Canoe is rated for 4hp. Is it practical to build a LT from scratch?

 Re: Canoe long tail
I have built two LT both for smaller boats and i have a just recently bought a swamp runner kit. if you take your time in to consideration and materials then just spending the $250 for the kit that works really well is the way to go in my opinion.

 Re: Canoe long tail
Now that Dixie has everything sorted out on the surface drive end, and it is just a short matter of time before we dominate the market share on that end, we are working on some prototypes that will REVOLUTIONIZE the longtail sector as well.

 Re: Canoe long tail
Depends on how detailed you get in your design. I know the first one I built ended up being way more expensive than a thi kit I'm not sure u could build one much cheaper then $300 but the thi kits are not high quality either. So if u want to have a project go for it

 Re: Canoe long tail
There's a guy on Youtube that built a transom to go on a double ended canoe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5ciwQo_ClcI've got a 6.5 Predator with the small Swamprunner on my freighter canoe and love it. I would not hang a motor of the side of a double ended canoe.
