My 35 hp vanguard makes a strange noise somewhere around 2000-3000 rpms but idle and WOT sound normal. It's kind of like there's an added vibration or maybe something is cinching up but I've not heard this on other motors. Im going to see if I can capture the noise on video next time I run it. I'm tempted to shoot some WD-40 where the driveshaft meets the crankcase but wanted to consult the MMT community/Briggs manual before I did anything.

Anyone heard this before?ImageUploadedByTapatalk1437360285.940928.jpg

A guy I know who was an aircraft mechanic and then a maintenance chief at Delta for 30 some odd years told me wd-40 was the worst bullshit ever invented and that it sucks the moisture out of everything and in some cases causes worse corrosion than what would normally happen. Which leads me to my point, being that it might dry that seal up and that wouldn't be fun.

Kind of why I'm asking. I'm sure I could dab some oil back there, too, but just kind of curious if anyone's heard their motors making a different noise in between idle and wot

Mine made a noise when running out of water that kinda sound like a vibration. Went away in water though

Ok I captured the noise. Notice how it sounds normal at idle but then gets this vibration after about 1500 rpms

I also have a Beavertail 35 hp and it doesn't make this noise. I wonder why? The upper bearing in the go devil is different but I could swear the noise sounds like it's coming from the engine.

U-joints and upper bearing was greased for this experiment.

Every long tail I or any of my friends ever had has made that noise at some point. Could be slightly out of balance prop, loose bolts on u joint, slight slop in the U joint itself, loose motor mounts, loose exhaust shroud. We would find something a little loose, tighten it up and it would go away for a few outings then return and usually not be the same issue as before. Eventually we just decided to let em eat. The long tail frame acts almost like a tuning fork and exaggerates minor rattling sounds. After uses, check make sure things are tight and run it like you stole it.

Our dealer here has a list of tips and tricks on his page. One mentions a knocking at mid range, I've heard it on mine but not out of the water. He says it may, and it was on mine, be the noise the motor makes sliding side to side on the pivot bolt and bushing. Tighten it a bit and see if the noise goes away.

So damn annoying when your other motors never made the same noise
