I have a 16 x 54 with a 14 or 15 inch transom didn't measure that, and was wondering if a 22hp long tail would be enough motor for it. I usually have a total of three guys and gear. Any input would be great!! Thanks

22 Hp will move any thing that floats. With that load and width of boat I would thing 15 MPH with that motor - maby.

It will work, I run a 18x50 mud hull and a Honda gx670 (was 24, but now rated at 22). I can plane 3 230+ men and my nephew 120 all wearing waders, beavertail flip over blind with all hunting items. get a bout 14-15 with that load.

Full disclosure**** my motor has tuned exhaust and has been rejetted to match. I have a Backwater Swomp Lite V twin kit that I have perfectly tuned the cave plate to get the most speed.

Here is a tip:
Most will recommend a 9x6 prop, but DON'T DO IT! Get a 9x5 and set out of water rpms at 4200ish. It will run 36-3700 loaded down and be in the upper teens most of the time. Mine runs 20 solo at 4180 rpm.

Best advice is to get a motor and get in the game now, they will only get more expensive.

Short answer is yes, but slow and not optimum. Of course, any longtail is not about speed but getting there and back, reliably and economically. I would suggest more horses, like a 25/27/35 HP and you will be set. Like 1 chance, I also run a bit better with a 9x6 rather than the 9x7 which is suggested by the mfg. for my 27 HP LT. Kind of sucks that a conventional outboard is less money than our "glorified lawmower" motors.
