Post Project: too old to run a long tail - change out for Jet
I had my longtail GD for sale, but I think I am going to change gears, if possible.

I love my long tail but my back will not take the pressure exerted on it by handling the 31hp vanguard. (I have already had surgery once, don't want twice).

I use my boat to go into shallow rivers to fish, I don't hunt the boat, go find mud or other normal uses for a go devil.

The boat is a 1848 Godevil 0.125 hull. The boat is in outstanding condition! but so is the longtail.

Has anyone ever put a jet outboard on one of these, if so how many hp (please specify if your talking powerhead or foot horse power). I was also considering building flotation pods for it, too.

I figure I would also need to install some sort of aluminum angle strake on the bottom.

You should post this out in the main forums so more people see it.
Several guys here swap regular outboards in the 50 hp range onto their SD rigs for summer fishing but haven't seen any jets. Don't see why it wouldn't work.

The only prob I see with running a jet on a go devil would be the cut back transom. The jet foot need flat clean water and need to be as far up as possible without sucking air because water going over the top will create drag and slow you down.

The 31 and 35 longtails will definitely give you a workout. Have you considered a surface drive. The surface drive is much easier to run and if you are in the shallows with any leaves, weeds or mud the jet can be a pain. You probably have a 16 inch transom so that will have to be built up to at least 21 inches to accommodate the jet. Short transom surface drives are available from most manufacturers. A 35 SD on that boat is sweet and really a lot easier to run then the longtail.

Oh yeah, I'm 75 years young, had 2 back surgeries, cancer, a heart attack, gall and kidny stones and a couple of really bad ingrown toenails. I can run a 35 surface drive on a 24 foot boat all day on the Yukon. Two hours fighting a 35 longtail tuckers me out.

Alll the best, Stu! I figure I have a couple more season with my 27 LT and then I have a big decision: either another 27 or step up to the 35, or more realistically, downsize to a 23 shorty, right now the Copperhead 23 has my vote. Lightweight, has recoil start, no reverse, and can probably move my 1648 good enough- I don't carry that much weight or at most two hunters and gear. Coyotebgone, my suggestion is to get a GDSD 27 or 35 and be done with it.

True that! I will certainly test drive the Copperhead or any other SD before buying. I can handle the 27 LT so it might be another 27 or 23!
