I'm about to purchase a 212 predator and the "small" kit from mudmotorkit.com (Swamp Runner) after reading some good info here and elsewhere. As usual, I would like to get some performance upgrades for this little motor, but my questions or my needs seem to be a little different that what I've seen here, so maybe you guys can help. I will be running this thing in a very small creek with lots of turns and obstacles. I've had two other mud motors on a 14ft jon boat out there and realize that speed is NOT what I need. I just need enough torque on bottom end to push through thick stuff with a boat load of gear. My previous 6.5 surface drive was a bit underpowered in that department, but did good enough and I had not modded it at all. Seems like most of the mods I've seen are geared toward increasing speed by way of more RPM. Do any of the easy mods like air intake, carb jet, and exhaust pipe actually help out on the lower end power enough to justify the cost? I hope that question makes sense. |

Just save your money to buy more props |

Haha. Probably not bad advice! But back to the original question, do any of these mods actually help with torque at the lower RPMs? I believe going with a lighter billet flywheel would actually reduce torque, but maybe I'm wrong? |

The Robertson Torque tube is supposed to be tuned just for that, better torque at the low end vs high RPMs where people want to be racing. More fuel and air helps as well. I suggest you join the Swamprunner forum when you get your kit, there's lots of information there on getting more juice out of the motors mated to their kits. And do carry spare props. I haven't broken one grinding over gravel or bumping stumps...yet. It'll happen, and I'll have spares. When tuned right, these kits go pretty shallow as the prop rides in the tall part of the wake. |

Great info, thanks for that. I have seen that Robertson torque tube as well as 3 or 4 other headers/mufflers, but wasn't sure which one to get. Sounds like that may help where I need it. About to drop the cash (credit) on the swamp runner kit, so I'll be on the forum soon enough I suppose. Thanks for the advice! |

What size boat are you putting it on? Depending on that, you may be better served with a medium kit and a 420. Mods can do a lot, but there is no replacement for displacement. |

We are hoping to push a 10-14ft jon boat or a square back canoe with this. If I was for sure just leaving it on a 14/42 jon boat I would strongly consider the larger engine based on our experience with this, but one requirement for us this time around is portability (weight). We will likely be installing/removing this engine with every use for a variety of reasons I'll not get into here. We actually looked at the mini, but felt it would just be too underpowered. |

If you determine to stay this course. Your best bet for that motor is to go to www.nrracing.com contact the owner there and he will hook you up. It's a go kart place but the guy does a ton of power stuff to tell motors and he is a wealth of knowledge. Prices aren't bad either [THUMBS UP SIGN] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
