| Post subject: | replace old engine |
I am new to the forum but have been looking at some of the posts. I am going to replace the engine on a 16hp longtail. I have run into a problem getting the old motor shaft out of the universal. I have tried heating the coupling and liquid wrench with no luck. Two small engine repair shops will not try to remove the engine due to the trouble they had on prior projects. Any advice on how to break the engine shaft loose from the universal. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

use pb blaster and a gear puller, you can rent them at autozone. |

The owners manual on GD's website walks you through it pretty good. As mentioned above, PB blaster helps as well. Sometimes you have to let it marinate in that stuff for a day to break free. PDF p.24 http://www.godevil.com/documents/Go-Dev ... Manual.pdf |

GD uses an oversize key and they beat the crap out of it to put it on...so u have to do the same to get it off. Use a big hammer and a 1/2-3/4 rod when u hit it Unfortunately, there's no way to get a good angle. |

Put a block of wood against the motor and a pry bar against the u joint. Don't put an oversized key back in. Its probably a 1/4" key stock and I would tack weld the key to the u joint to keep it from coming out. I'm sure this is why GD puts oversized keys in the first place. Tack weld the key and use safety set screws with safety wire to keep them from backing out. |
