My nephew is a budding fabricator and would like to build a longtail with a harborfreight 13 hp engine I'm looking for a set of plans him and his buddies can follow and build while I oversee he will have access to any equipment needed welders small late mill etc but I would like some plans he can follow anyone know of any ??? Thanks for any Input

Mad mud motor plans. You can get em on ebay . Good place to start. You can change some things to make it better It's simple. get a mud motor. shoot ducks in the face. |

Although it requires no fabrication, he would be much happier going with the glider kit from backwater inc. he will have a durable frame that will last as long as he wants it to. The mad plans aren't bad at all if done right. But IMO the longevity of the backwater system far outweighs any sense of satisfaction that they will get from building their own. Just my 2 cents. Which ain't worth a penny. |

I used the mad plans. I had to change alot of thing and fabricate my own because the motor they built was for a 6.5 and I built a 22hp. It's mostly a good place to start with ideas. A guideline more than a plan. You can follow the plans to a T if you want. But I changed alot of things to make stuff better It's simple. get a mud motor. shoot ducks in the face. |

Don't know anything about mad plans but growing up building things from scratch by myself, I believe following a set of plans or doing a little research and making your own plans will teach them more and and better them for a future in any type of mechanical industry. Don't be afraid to fail that's one way learn. |

I've built a handful of LT's over the years using the Mad Motor plans. For the price of the plans, it is a good investment for a start. I changed several things over the course of the builds as I went along. |

For those that built useing these plans how is the transom mount pis I've seen were c clamps is that what's in the plans ??? |

That's one of the things I changed. The c clamps to me were kind of ghetto. I made a solid bracket out of 3/8x4" c channel. Heavy shit. Then welded 3/4 g9 nuts in the bracket and used g9 bolts. I'll take a picture and show you later. Thinking about it. I changed almost everything It's simple. get a mud motor. shoot ducks in the face. |

I made some out of scrap 1/4" plate I had laying around. [url][/url] The bottom plate of the mud motor has similar tabs that go in between the tabs on the transom mount. I just slide a 1/2" bolt through the holes. |

Yea I'll change that for sure I would never trust cheap Chinese clamps I have seen those things get dropped and shatter |
