I need some advice to modding my mud motor. I am new..so please bare with me. I have gd 9hp...I like it for the size but I wanted little more power.
I ended purchasing a hop kit that came with air filter, hd valve springs, advance timing kit. I also purchased a Robertson torque tube and lastly a bore out/bigger carburetor.

I do not want to remove the governor because I like the protect the engine just in case the prop jumps out of the water.

I was hoping to just installing the exhaust, filter and carb. And leave out the springs and key.

Could I ruin my motor without installing
Timing key and springs and leaving stock?

At what rpm does HD valves start to float?

The springs are to let it rev higher. If you are not raising the governer rpm the yes you can leave them out for now. The timing key being left out will not hurt your engine. That being said , you bought a hopup kit for more power from someone that put a "matching kit" together. Why not just install the kit as its intended? What engine is it anyway? Ive never serviced a GD that small

Not sure on the single cylinder 9hp. Honestly as soon as you remove or tweak the governor you better have the springs changed or you will likely been getting valve float, if not worse.

Thinking of getting a 9hp myself. What boat do you have it on and what kinda speed do you get? I want one for a lightweight 1436. If i can get 12-14 mph empty id be tickled
