Post Backwater Swomp Lite on a Kaboat?
I am looking at a 9hp SwompLite from Backwater for my inflatable. Yes I won't be jumping logs and such with it but mainly will be used to throw in the back of m Polaris 6x6 rolled up and take to super weedy sloughs and lakes to get around a lot better than the 18 hp Nissan 2 stroke outboard I am currently using.

Any reason why this wouldn't work?

Thanks for any help.

It will work, it will just take some getting used to as it will want to slide around. Better bring a few patch kits where you're going. What's the weight difference between a 14' riveted jon and a Kaboat? Can you haul a small jon boat on top of your 6x6? Either way keep us posted, it sounds pretty fun, maybe the next big thing.

Thanks for the reply man!!

Yeah I wish I could swing putting a 14' Jon on the top of my 6x6, but its the Polaris 6x6 Big Boss not the ranger so I can roll up the Kaboat and put the motor next to it and all my camping gear on top of that. Also want to keep my options open when I leave with my enclosed trailer to head out to some areas with my 6x6s in there along with my Kaboat so I can strike by sea or land. ;) I also occasionally roll up the boat and motor and put them in a small bush plane to access other lakes and rivers only accessible by plane.

Another advantage of the Kaboat for my uses is I can still get on step with 4 adults and a caribou (quartered not alive ;) ) and hunting gear for the day in it with a 18 hp outboard which is much more capacity than a 14' Jon from what little I have read.

Been doing a lot of reading on here and a lot of searches. Tons of info to digest certainly and looking forward to using my first mud motor. Seems like I should be able to dial it in with the versa mount and cavitation plate to work pretty well even though the Kaboats only got a 13.5" transom?

If I can get 14 mph with a standard 6 hp outboard with 2 people and a kid and fishing gear do you think it would be realistic to expect the 9 hp Subie/Swomp Lite combo to atleast get similar performance? The boat planes at roughly 9 mph.

I have no illusions I will be able to safely go where a "real" boat will go but generally I am not going places with stumps and such as that isn't much of a concern in many places I go in Alaska with this as tree line is at only 2200' above sea level and often I use the boat above that.

Thanks again for the reponse and I will continue to search and read on here as I don't want to be THAT newbie here that can't run a search to my most obvious questions haha.

Call Jake at Backwater, he brought a Swomp lite to along to Alaska ( pretty funny story). Ask if he can connect you with someone to try one out. One thought was to make sure the transom is strong enough or look into possibly reinforcing it, much the same as some do with light gauge riveted jon boats. Longtails push on a transom differently than an outboard.
Great picture!

I will give Jake a call for sure. Just out of curiosity what kind of speeds are you getting with your 10 HP Swomp Lite on your 14X36 with various loads and such.

Thanks

16-17 MPH with a totally empty boat and my 240#. It slows quickly with any load of significance as that size boat gets low in the water pretty quick. The speed will even be significantly affected by load placement in that small of a boat.
Hunt load of; 1-hunting partner, 1-35# dog, blind, 2 bags of duck decoys and 2 small blind bags it halfways planes out at 8 mph but it will push through some thick stuff.

I have a 15' XL that I have owned since 2013. My motor is now in Alaska but it will likely be early Setember now before I get to mount it up and try it due other hunts I have going on around Alaska.
