I've got a 9hp Honda 2:1 in a Go Devil frame and it isn't meant for speed. It spins a 10x9 prop but only at 1850rpm 10mph empty and 6mph loaded. Unless you are pushing a barge extremely slow I wouldn't use a gear reduction on a long tail. |

I would lean towards that the motor doesn't need gear reduction but the prop pitch and diameter to get the rpms of your motor in the "range". Sometimes less pitch or diameter will help speed and/or load carrying abilities. Back in the day a ran a 16hp GDLT changed from a 14x42 to a 16x44 - got a little more speed and load carrying ability. A loaded 36" will not plane as good as a 44" with the same load nor a 14' vs 16' in most cases. I got 13-15 mph 16x44(standard ribbed 100 ga Lowe) with 2 adults, dog, gear, and 6 dz. decoys. |

I would go 16hp minimum if possible. |

on a non reduced engine the pto comes off of the crank shaft. on a 2/1 reduction engine the pto comes off of the camshaft. They are in different places on the engine face plate. aside from performance issues - no they will not bolt up on the same frame. |
