Re: new motor
I have a 40 on a 17 foot boat and absolutely love it. I’d go as big as your pocket book allows. I had three total people plus duck blind construction materials in my boat last weekend and I was able to easily boat in an inch of water. 40 is a beast and really pushes on the mud.

I too would say buy the largest engine you can afford. Could you get by with the 23? Yes. But if you're like most, you'll be content for a short period of time before wanting more HP.
I have a 40 BW on my 17.5x48 and I bump 27mph and still push over 20 with a hunt load, a couple buddies, and my lab.
