I am new to the longtail game, and I just bought a 16hp go devil. I noticed there is some freeplay in the prop, and was wondering if it should be doing this? The shaft isn't moving when the prop moves so I don't think its the seals. The prop will spin 180 degrees around on the mount and stop. Should it be doing this?

It shouldn't do that, check tightness on the prop nut and there should be a keeper ring behind the nut. I had a 23hp some set up and didn't have that problem

I was told it was suppose to do this, and I didn't think it was right. It just seems like it's loose on the shaft. I will try to tighten and see how that helps.

Let me get this straight, does the prop spin on the shaft or when you turn the prop the shaft spins too, is that the play you are talking about?

it will spin 180 degrees on the shaft one way and then back to the same position the other way.

If i remember right i think the GDLT props screw on, so therefor i think you need to tighten it all the way against the shaft screw and then there should be 2 nuts on the back of the prop, make sure the first one is all the way against the prop and then make sure the lock nut is tight up against the other nut!

Yes your prop is supposed to spin on the shaft. So when you are moving the prop will tighten it self up to the bottom nut and if you are to hit something like a stump it will be able to loosen it self up and not twist the shaft.

PROPELLER ADJUSTMENTS
The propeller on your Go-Devil is threaded and screws on to the drive shaft. The propeller must run in a floating position. The propeller tolerance should be checked monthly. The end of the blade should move two to four inches from left to right after it has been operated under normal conditions (example from 12:00 to 2:00). If the propeller runs too loose it will cause
premature wear of the shaft threads. If the prop needs tightening, remove the rear nylon jam nut and lock washer. Tighten the prop and remaining jam nut hand tight. Reinstall the lock washer and nylon jam nut. Tighten the nylon jam nut as tight as possible using a socket or combination wrench. DO NOT USE AN IMPACT GUN! After usage the prop should loosen
slightly as required. As the prop leaves and enters the water during peration, you may hear a popping or cracking sound in the front of the engine. This sound is the propeller floating on the drive shaft, which is normal. Sometimes there is a vibration at an RPM just above idle,
this is also normal.
