Ok my truck tells me a certain percent of oil life is left!! Whst percent do you change it at!! I change every 5000 !! They send me a diagnostic test telling me when my oil needs to be changed but that is way over 5000 !!

That system uses a complex set of variables to estimate oil life left. The primary variable is crankshaft rpm/time. I had the same Q and asked a GM master tech who is a good friend. Like you, I ignore it and change every 5K.

I change mine a few times a year whether it needs it or not lol. I am not real big on the idea that oil goes bad that fast.

To all you haters... I follow the Oil life monitor in my Duramax.. It is set to 10k miles. SO I wanted to Know for sure if it was safe. I sent in an oil sample to Blackstone labratories and confirmed that my engine was safe to operate on 10k mile oil changes. If you really want to know run your oil 5k miles and send in for a sample to be done with a TBN test. THat will tell you how much additive pacakage is left in your oil.

If your just one to spend money on oil changes too often good for you, because you really arent helping your engine last any longer. Nowadays people dont keep vehicles long enough anyway to justify seeing how long an engine will actually least.

I just talk to chevy people !! They said you can go by the oil life usually about 15% of it left you change it or if you want you can do how you feel!! Was just wondering why would they put a computer telling you when to change it when 5000 is usually the way it's always been done!! When I would change it at 5000 my oil life was only at 50% so maybe hour right on with it Marcus

Because the oil of today is much better than the 3k or 5k oil of yesterday.

Go synthetic and change it every 20k with a filter change fill up @ 10k -- You will be fine

Though I will never buy another GM product, the ones I still own get ~7500 mile changes of the MobilOne and a filter. Soon as they dishonored all warranties prior to it becoming Obama Motors that did it for me.

I am somewhat neglectful, it gets changed baout twice a year I guess. That would make it somewhere near 5k miles, synthetic has been working cause she's about to roll over 270k. '97 GMC Sierra Z71 w/ a 5.7.

oils relatively cheaper then the cost of an engine, change it every 5000 (synthetic) and leave the oil examination to the egg heads with nuthin better to do. If you have a newer LS based powered(4.8/5.3/6.0) chevy truck, oil weight is more important then life, those things like the thinner stuff for sure.

Hell I got a real good one for ya'll.

The guy across the street from my shop has his son's '88 S-10 pickup, 2.5L 4 banger, 350k miles on it. His '92 Silverado single cab's odometer broke at 560k miles a couple years ago, he estimates 650k on it now. He works like 2.5 hours away.

I have seen this for myself, the only thing he has done to the Silverado is put a set of rings in it, and a tranny. It's a 5.7 as well.

I drive a new 2011 Duramax. I have been selected by Amsoil to get testing done on my synthetic oil as the miles add up since my truck is the DEF truck. I will post up the results when available. Randy
