The fuck you can't force fetch a dog in 3 weeks, hell an expert like you should be able to force fetch a chihuahua in 3 weeks. I suggest you take that same 2x4 and smack yourself upside the head with it. Learn how to use punctionation and write complete sentences so you come off as less of a dip shit...

at least we all agree that the obedience isn't where it needs to be. i'm guessing he's not planning on running him in all age stakes some day and he falls closer to the meat dog category, and that's fine. in a perfect world this shit would've all be done months ago and the last 2 months were spent polishing him up with hunting setups. this isn't the case so he really has 2 options, shut him down for the year, or hunt him and get him some exposure and deal with the ob and ff issues in the off season. the choice is his, but miracles don't happen overnight. i'm a realist and know he's not likely to shut him down for the year 2 weeks into our duck season.

Jason, you're a fucking asshole. Haha.

Bro with the fucked up dog, start training from scratch. People give me shit for being hard on my dog. But he's always with me and I'm always reinforcing obedience. He doesn't wear a shock collar when we hunt Bc he doesn't need it. Mind you, I don't have a master hunter title champ. My dog makes me happy and that's that. I fucked up and didn't FF him properly Bc I was inexperienced and didn't have the heart to finish, therefore I was stuck with obedience. My dog does what he wants to do.....when I let him do it. I think that's the secret to a good hunting dog.

Jason, take note. ^^^^ what you see here is constructive criticism. And punctuation. Hahaha. Holler at me fucker.

OP, Good luck on bad dog! But leave at home this hunting season!

I can tell by AKA's patience on here he's obviously a top notch on dog trainer as well (insert sarcasm) as posted before I do believe as well there are some fundamentals missing with the pup, remember he is still a puppy. get a ecollar, be assertive, be stern, if your not enjoying the time training then stop because theres a good chance the dog isnt either. they want to learn and they feed off of your attitude. I always think back to chris aikens dvd when hes talking about when he was a kid and his mother might tell him multiple times to do something, but when his dad told him to do something he did it after the first time. this is really what you want out of your dog. I have a finished titled yellow male that to me listens the first time everytime no matter what the command, however he has learned that the first command from my better half wont be the last before he is corrected. I know I am going to get criticism here but its not from him not have OB, its because she has allowed this to happen, and he has learned how far he can push her. dogs are brilliant, and they want to learn. dont expect a title dog overnight.. enjoy every stage with them as you would with a kid cause they really are, the time you get with them is far too short and will be over before you know it. theres great info on boards, ask questions, learn to sift though the bullshit, let the keyboard bullies do their thing and find something that works for you. best of luck with your dog.

Post Re: retriever problems
Im working on FF now as I started a while ago but never followed through. I spent most of the summer working on basic obedience sit stay down front heel ect in training classes and at home (12 week program) and he has that down pretty damn good. With spending most of the time working on basic training he didnt get much of any hunt related training since may/june and thats part of the problem. I have only had the problems happen in shallower ponds and lakes where I can hunt from shore instead of hunting from the boat because of deep mud or water where the dog can't stand and has no choice but to come directly back to me. This is the reason im going back to working with him on a lead to drive it in to his head that he has to come directly back to me no matter the situation, even when he has a real bird and he wants it for himself. I am going to save some birds and freeze them so I can reinforce it at home that he can't try and toss em around or rip out feathers. He just needs some polishing I understand this is his first season and he isn't going to be perfect but I want to teach him correctly this year so I don't have these problems down the road. Its not like I let him do what he wants there is stern corrections when he does something wrong he just needs more repetitions and minor tweaks in training to get him right.

This has nothing to do with showing off to friends as I tell everyone I hunt with that my dog isn't that great but I have to work him. When singles come in I let other people take them so I can steady the dog and reinforce what I want him to do.

I said before that he doesnt have problems doing retrieves with dummies or bumpers water or land its only a problem with a real bird that he forgets the training. I also want him to get used to hunting out of the boat. So I am going to take him out in the boat him and make the needed corrections. He has to get experience doing the real thing I see no benefit in leaving him home and not teaching to be steady when birds are coming in and not breaking on gunshots because these are things that cant be taught in my backyard.

well if your that ignorant that you cant see I was poking at your patience, it was at the end of my post I said to ignore keyboard hotheads, and there was no names used but now that you've proven yourself repeatedly yeah i was talking about you. so if you dont have something helpful to say about his issues move on. If you have something to say to me, PM me or email me, your doing no one any good on this thread.

Post Re: retriever problems
Well....I think what's being lost in this thread is that the basic function of a "retriever" is to bring birds, bumpers, etc. back to you. Not playing once he gets his toes on ground.

Personally, if this were my dog, I would suspend trying to teach in the field and go back to the yard to instill good habits. The dog isn't going to learn how to perform in the field without good fundamentals.

As I said earlier, find a good training program and start from square one, which means leash work OB. Then move into hold and FF, then collar conditioning, and simple casting.

There are several good programs that you can purchase that will help guide you. Fowl Dogs, SmartWork, Lardy's material, Akins stuff. You have to remember a little time backtracking now will pay off in the long run.

The color of the dog (chocolate in this case) doesn't matter. A well trained dog is a well trained dog, and color has nothing to do with it.

Just my thoughts.....not that I know anything about dog training.

Because everyone trusts advice from someone when they can't even do something that was taught in grade school.....
