lab won't jump out of boat
Long story short, I've gotta 3 year old lab that won't jump out of my duck boat to retrieve my ducks. Dog will go into water on land w/ no problem whatsoever but out of a boat I gotta shove her ass in. Anyone who trains dogs on here have any advice on how to fix this problem?......Thanks

Re: lab won't jump out of boat
Does he have firm footing where you want him to jump? My dog does not like to launch from certain spots because he slips. A piece of carpet might fix this.
Did he jump out of the boat and land on something hard as a pup? Cypress knee or something? He might be scared. Will he lauch off a dock or high shoreline?
Have you tried one of those platforms that sits over the side of the boat right at water level? Might be an easy fix no matter what the problem is.

Re: lab won't jump out of boat
hey greg this is what i would suggest but make sure to take it real slow and make it super fun sho the dog can try to forget about it these are things that most people dont think about but when the dog does something like jumping and hittin their feet (something that hurts them) they quit doing it just like you dont like pain. the otheir thing i was wondering was in your post you said you have to push its as in if you do it ruthlessly the dog wont want to do it which in return wont jump out the boat after down game

start in the yard and move to the edge of the pond then work away from the edge untill she's got it. Won't take as long as you think. Buddy of mine had one that wouldn't hit the water for nothing. Put a fine female with him hitting bumpers and in a matter of two throws he was blasting in. Few more days and for the rest of the time I had him he'de hit it full blast.

Re: lab won't jump out of boat
I had an issue with mine jumping also. Albeit not out of the boat but more over the side of the pool. I made a ramp to go from the deck to over the railing of the pool. Seems to have worked cause that's the only way he'll jump now. No need to worry about them hitting their paws. Maybe a deck/platform covered with carpet would help.

Re: lab won't jump out of boat
They don't like slipping and sliding so use some carpet. The boat hunters I train start in a pirogue in the yard. Then I put some cinder blocks under it. We run some pattern blinds and marks from it then we go to a boat in the water. If you make it a game and give them good footing and a way to get back/out easily, i've never had an issue easing them into it like that.

Re: lab won't jump out of boat
Greg, I just read this and agree w/ several above. Give dog a good supportive launch platform so they dont slip and bust the back half of their body on side of the boat. I had one that wouldn't jump and put boat along a sandbar in river and let dog jump in the boat from the water side where he could stand. Then threw bumper out that side so he knew he could hit bottom. Was using a War Eagle and dog step and this was also to teach dog where the step was and get him to use it. As he started really launching we just started to move boat away from sandbar and he had no idea he was jumping into 5+ ft of water.
