Here's my baby. Full Draht breeding, but not been tested by Draht standards. Just a damn fine hunting dog.

Draht breeders are few and far between. There may be some in FL, but most of the breeders I've found are in the Northern part of the US. You can look at the German Wirehair too. Basically, the Americanized version of the Draht. There is a big debate between breeders on whether these dogs are actually one in the same. I've done a lot of reading on it, and it looks like to me that it all comes down to the purity of the bloodlines and the Draht testing standards. There are some members of the Amarillo Bird Dog Club that run wirehairs, and they are just as fine a dog as the Draht in my opinion.

If you are looking for an all around dog that points, hunts, and retrieves in all types of weather, the Draht or wirehair is perfect. But, if you want a dog that retrieves only, you will never beat a Lab.

It's all up to what you want.

It seems to me that a lab can do everything a Draht can do.. Maybe more I could be wrong but it seems that a lab will find a body burried in snow.. Sniff out bombs or drugs.. retrieve your birds.. Flush pheasants and could tree a coon.... So how it a Draht supperior... Just wondering.. It seems that if trained they will both do alot of things well..

you can train a dog to anything. Labs are born to retrieve and a draht is bred to retrieve fur and feather, track, point, etc..

I'm new to the forum, so I don't wanna piss anybody off just yet.....Dogs are like mud motors......the GDSD and the GTR are both designed to do the same thing (with exception of reverse). But, I'll bet if you ask a lot of guys on here which one does it better, it will be "their brand".

I agree, there is a guy around here that has a drat and uses it to track deer. Not a very good success rate from what I have heard. I don't understand how a draht could be better. I understand different breeds are suppose to be better at certain things, but I think a lab is a good all around animal.

Dogs are a direct reflection of breeding quality and quantity of training they receive as well as actual time in the field on "wild game". To be honest with you, I love my Draht. She points quail and pheasant. She is a retrieving machine, but only weighs 41 pounds. There is no way in hell that I will be able to take her goose hunting this winter. The geese would carry her off.

We have 2 English pointers, a lab, a Draht, and 2 German shorthairs. I like my upland dogs to point and hold. So, the dogs that do that WELL are the dogs that have been bred and trained for that purpose.

I believe you can train any dog. But it helps tremendously if the dog you are training has the qualities you are looking for in their bloodline/genes.

As far as tracking deer....I don't know schmidt about that. The 7 mag leaves no tracking......

how do these dogs work into family life? young kids? other dogs?

I have to admit, my family and I are hard core lab folks......but I'm very interested in a dog that does a little more than what my current lab does.

A Draht and German Wirehair have close to the same personality as a Shorthair or Lab. They make outstanding family dogs. They know when you are going hunting. They watch you put your gear on and load up your truck. That's when they turn the switch on! Then they turn it off again as soon as you get back home. My female sleeps at the foot of my daughters bed every night. She is the only dog I have that doesn't ride in the box.

As far as colors, there are predominantly 2. Black and white, and liver and white. In the upland world, we don't use the term "chocolate" for whatever reason. Anyway, breeding and genes are basically what determines how much white the dog has and how well they will "Roan" out. My Aala is black/white roan.

Just like labs, these dogs can have either color when they breed.

Ask the breeder if you can come look the pups over at different ages before you pick your pup up. They all have a different coat. Some are really wirey, some are short like a shorthair, some will be very "beardy" and some won't. But also look for the pup that gets out and explores and carries stuff around in its mouth. At the 6-8 week mark, you might even get one to point a wing or rag. All of this will make your training easy in the long run.

Honestly my lil female is the easiest dog I've ever trained in my life. Took her to the wheat over Thanksgiving to shoot geese for the first time. Showed her how to lay down ONCE. That's all it took. When she sees the flaps close on the layout blind, she hits the deck. It comes very natural.

My point is that you will be very satisfied that you decided to go with a Draht.

If I had to change one thing, I may have chosen a male over a female. It seems Aala is topped out at 41 pounds.

so is it possible to get a quality pup, from a quality breeder, even if I have no plans for breeding, or running field trials or hunt tests?

That's all you will get unless you pursue otherwise. They are good all around dogs, but you still have to choose the right one.

Unfortunately, there's not much of a difference in the price if you buy a Wirehair or Draht. The breeders are few and far between and know it, so they charge what they want. I would expect to pay from 700 up. But, I'll bet with some patience and looking around, you can find one a little cheaper. Have not had the time to check in often. I trained and owned labs pointers and now 2 dd. The DD is similar to a lab on how it relates to the family, its a better house dog than a kennel only dog,so are most labs. None of my 8 labs had a nose like either of my 2 DD 's, The two DD:s I own , have great eye sight and mark real well. I don t know if its because i have more experience now than when I just trained labs, but it seems like it just takes less training to make good working dogs out of them. I seen lots of DD's but only a few wirehairs. The ones i have seen were much smaller and more white and were good dogs but different than the DD's I have seen.

There is much I find wrong with the vdd testing system. It s much too hot and the cover is all wrong to put test on down south. I tested in Tenn and seen test in La and Fla. it just not fair to a pup it's too hot, the cover is to green and thick and the spring cotton tails don' t often leave good track. To earn high scores you need a good performance on fur and its hard to do down south. That said it is still a better system than the akc offers. You have a good shot at getting a pup that will make a fine to a great dog with any registered litter of dd's .

You have to do your homework, the pups have to be properly exposed to the things they will see and do when hunting. They do need training but much of it can be done at home as yard work and the rest out in the field while l hunting.

If all you do is ducks get a lab or Boykin. If you want to hunt Quail in the deep south to the end of the season get a pointer.

I have hunted ducks quail geese woodcock rabbits blood tracked my biggest deer and made a week long wild pheasant hunt with my two dogs. they will run deer kill nutria if allowed and chase any cat around. ( if you have cats you don t want DD's)
