Does anyone know a way to preserve a duck for training a dog? I have herd of drying them out, i have herd to just freeze them and pull em out when needed. Also what about wings..I have herd to coat them in salt for three days and let them dry out then use them.. any ideas at all would be greatly appreciated! |

Or you can call one of the guys I know who train professionally and ask them. They buy or raise their ducks for training. Dumbass |

We used pigeons with clipped wings just saying it doesn't have to be duck all your trying to achieve is them spotting a bird some what flyin and them it's like finding a wounded |

You want them to pick the bird up not the birds wing --- Shoot some poule dou and use them if nothing else -- I have a few birds in the freezer just for this purpose |

The wings work for starting dogs on feathers but the birds are more realistic once you get them going. The freezer will do fine but refreeze them after use. You can get a few uses and then get rid of them. Ya'll take it easy on GA......They kill so few ducks over there they don't want to waste one on having a better dog. Oh yeah, they don't really need a dog to pick up the half dozen they kill in a season!

Make sure your duck does not waddle away. He should be kept in a large cage with a pool of water to swim in. When he starts getting his adult feathers begin throwing him up in the air to introduce him to flying. Don't force him or throw him to high. Make it fun for him. Stand in front of him and flap your arms up and down quickly to simulate flying. If he's from good stock he'll get the idea about what he's supposed to do. Eventually you'll throw him up in the air and he won't come down. Then you know he's ready for advanced training. If it's winter get your compass and face him in a southerly direction and throw him in the air. If it's summer then wait till winter to begin advanced training. Join a duck club to learn about more techniques. He will be ready for migration trials before you know it. Good luck. |

Also f you work him/her with a real bird you might want to feed your dog first. First time I used a real duck with mine a used a teal. I managed to get the head back..the rest he scarfed down. |

When I had dogs to train, I would take a few spoonies or a couple ring-necks and use for this. Also would use birds that may have been shot all to pieces or birds w/ real bad rice breast. |

Be a good idea to see if you can find a source for live or fresh killed farm raised birds in you area. Check you local COOP. They can probably send you in the right direction. |

I use real birds as much as possible when training. Near the garage, there's a chest freezer where they are stored. In addition, I have a small dormer type refrigerator that will keep ducks at 32 degrees (just freezing). The "birds of the week" are kept in there. Each bird is stored as dry as possible and always wrapped in clean, dry newspapers. The newspaper absorbs excess water. I take them out of the freezer and let them thaw a bit before each training session. It is important to time the "thaw" so that they are still firm in the middle when we train. They last longer doing this. I can usually make a "set" of mallards at least a couple of weeks. It is important to keep the ducks away from flies as much as possible (bucket with a lid). I place them on a drying rack in the shade when training. They are kept in a cooler when transprting. They get thrown out when I can't stand the smell anymore. Mallards are expensive at usually $8-10 apiece. I have a source of pheasants once in awhile, but they don't hold up as well as ducks. If you want to get the most out of training, dogs will continually perform better with the real thing. I haven't put a wing on a bumper in ten years. As far as I'm concerned it is a waste of time. A dog knows the difference. A few years ago there was an article in "The Retriever Journal" titled "The Pros' Secret for Training". It was using real birds all the time. |

If I want a whole duck for training: In Alaska using a whole duck for dog training is "wanton waste" and subject to all sorts of legal problems. I take a bird, open the breast and remove the breast meat. Salvage of the breast meat covers the "wanton waste" problem. Then sew up the breast and then I am legal. Freeze it until needed. Use it. Wash it off, dry in overnight and freeze til the next use. I have even removed the body and inserted a bumper on a rope and then sew it up, but that is more trouble than it's worth IMO Duckdon |

"Wonton waste" considerations are not applicable to pen raised mallards. Training ducks are purchased from breeders and are indentified by a clipped toe. In Illinois, I purchase a yearly permit which allows me to use pen raised birds. I carry the permit and purchase receipt with me at all times when training. |
