Post Shock collar training theory, right or wrong?
So I purchased a shock collar for my 13 week old chessie...
I have no experience with them...
My theory is to use 2 collars
1 to have on him while I'm at work an for him to play an just be a puppy...
The second is going to be straight business, training, in the boat, retrieving, and going out socializing. So hopefully when I switch the collars he knows it time to work. The strategy works for k-9 units an that's how shepards are trained for LPSO.

I plan to keep the settings low on the collar n only turn it up when he wonders out the yard or dis obeys my order to come back...
I really want to personally train my dog, I have had success in the past with black labs but never used a shock collar but I think my chessie needs it.. I know my dog has great blood line an should not disappoint but my g/f's family thinks it's a lost cause an he will be unhandleable when he grows up..

Any and all advice is welcome and appreciated!
.

Best video on e-collar conditioning is the one put out by Mike Lardy.

An e-collar is supposed to be an extension of the leash. Most young dogs do well while on the leash, but when released try to test you. I think the idea of wearing the dummy collar during the day is to get the dog used to the collar. That way they do not have a "hunting switch" and only obey when you put the collar on. In training situations, you only want to start out at the lowest setting and just turn it up enough to get the dogs attention....just like a choke or pinch collar. BE 100% SURE THAT THE DOG KNOWS THE COMMANDS AND WHAT YOU ARE TELLING IT TO DO BEFORE YOU APPLY THE E-COLLAR. I've seen a lot of good dogs ruined because their owner burned them up constantly with the e-collar.

It absolutely works well when used correctly. Like the other guys said....grab you a video and you can't go wrong.

Your Chessie pup is too young to be expected to respond correctly to an e-collar.....way too young!

Proper collar conditioning "happens" after formal obediance. Teaching formal OB begins after the pup's permanent teeth are in, when the pup is mentally mature and most of all after the taught commands such as "here", "sit" and "heel" are in place. Which means the collar won't make him do the right thing "out of the blue". E-collars don't teach.....they enforce.

In addition, the breed you are working with needs to know why he is doing something (more so than a Lab) and your pup will respond only if he trusts you. "Zapping" a young, under-prepared pup with the collar for something he doesn't clearly understand will create lasting issues you don't want.....including a lack of trust.

Simply said, "An e-collar isn't going to fix anything." Sorry if that all seems to be redundant, but sometimes it takes saying things several different ways to make sense.

Yea yea , that makes since that he is to young, I haven't used it yet, I was looking for info on his age I should start with the e collar. I still need to work in a couple new commands in our training routine an polish off the ones he got down packed.
Thanks y'all!

Never dealt w/ à chessie but several labs. Let him enjoy being à puppy à little. Work on general obedience for the first 6 to 8 months. There have been as many dogs ruined w/ 3-collars as perfected. Like already mentioned, only use the collar to re-enforce what the dogs knows. This means "knows beyond à shadow of à doubt". Be careful and good luck.

Anyone who puts a shock collar on a 13 week old puppy, may as well just put a .22 mag in the dogs head. Either way the dog will be useless from that moment on.

I agree. I didn't read the part about the dog being thirteen weeks old. Your pup is still in the learning stage of his life and brain is still developing. There is no way that he is even leash conditioned well enough to behave for long periods of time at this point. Everything at this point of life/training is supposed to be FUN AND GAMES.

I know training water dogs is a little different, but we don't put ANY pressure on our pointers until they are 10 to 12 months old.

Be patient, take your time, and get a good training video or book and you will be satisfied with the end result. If you like books there is a good upland book that has a lot of info that crosses over to the waterfowl world. It's called "How to speed train your bird dog". It has lots of simple tricks to "trigger" the pups instincts early in life with simple things you can do in your back yard. This will make training easier on down the line. Got mine for 5 bucks on Amazon.com
