Another thing their slow. If you need a faster dog don't get one of these get a lab from an American breeder. My dad had one back in the day and it was the best lab he's ever owned. They can all be knuckleheads. Sent via telegraph |

You are.correct they are slower on open water but their strength makes them faster through the grass and muck. |

They are too big for me. Buddy of mine has one that he paid close to 1k for and its the dumbest dog I've ever been around. I've got a 125.00 american that's the smartest dog I've ever had. Im just not a fan of having a 90-100lb dog in the boat which is the main reason I got an american(she only weighs 60lbs and does everything I want her to do). I know every dog is different just like people, but don't let someone tell you a dog wont be a good duck dog because of blood line etc. Its all about training and relationship. The smaller american lab is better for what I need and do. |

The reason I asked is that a friend of mines lab is about 60lbs and is a male. I asked him what kind he was and he said he was a British lab. The dog is fast on land and really smart. He must have his shit wrong about his own dog. |

Probably so. Most british(block heads) are big as hell and weigh in the 90lb range. |

I have two British Males. They are big at 65# (8.5 year old on the left) and 75# (one year old on right). Monsters compared to most of the other Brit males I have come in contact with. Here is the 8 year old in the mud: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=25895 |

I got a British, she only 45 pounds at 11.5 months. She's the fastest lab I ever seen. |

So the size pretty much depends on the bloodlines I guess |

Had a female I backgrounded as a diabetic alert dog a couple of summers ago that was a about 40# and seriously fast. I had her tied to the bumper of my truck while I ran my 8 year old. She broke the collar and beat him to the bumper. At the beach she would go through waves not over them for a fetch. Shame she ended up as a service dog. |

<--- My lab is an English. She's wonderful. Just a pet, but I had her working pretty good before the kids came. Wonderful with the kids. Sheds like a mofo! That's my only complaint. |

My neighbor has 2...both males and one is 80# and the other is a fatass at 108#..... he is lazy but listens, the other is balls to.the wall....got to use shock collar for 1st flight then he calms down and listens. If I were looking to get a.smaller retriever it would definitely be a.boykin. |

Yea I thought about a Boykin but where I hunt there's a lot of hitch hikers (cucabers or however u spell it). I'd get tired of pulling them out of the dogs hair |

My buddy has a English lab. Not real fond of her in the field but most of that she her training. She is small, 50# and very short legged. Swims like a fish. Tends to gain weight real easy. Great in the house but never really gets into the hunt like my dogs. She is rather laid back, skidish and lacks confidence. All in all they really like her, she is great with little kids and they are ok with her field work. I give her a "thumbs up" but she is just not my style. Duckdon |

British labs are AWESOME. I bought my lab Major Dog in Germany. Breeders are more serious about breeding a true hunter. Less worry about hips and blindness genes. If I were looking for a good lab today, I would call Martin Deeley in Central Florida and ask him to find me a good British lab from a line of smaller European dogs. Major is about 75 lbs but overweight right now. By January 29th he'll be down to about 70 or less. He's a hunting machine and super-laid back at home. Goes everywhere with me, including to my office everyday. Plays with my 6 month old twins like they're his own babies. true member of the family, but hunts dove, duck, snipe and even occasional quail like a champ! Once you've had a true Brtish Lab, you never go back to anything else.... |
