There are a cpouple of chocolate labs in the New Iberia area that are in the shelter. 2 males about 1 year old. Look pure bred by the pics I've seen. They are owner surrender and are UTD on shots. Will be neutered when adopted. Here are a couple pictures. |

That second one looks skittish as hell. And I'm thinking a little younger than a year.... |

I would think their tail would be tucked if scared. Looks more like puppy acting to me. But both look like they are worth a look. |

I can't do another dog, already have two, one chocolate lad, so I'm just curious... Could a dog like these be trained and become a decent hunting dog? How old is too old to start a dog? Not to be a champion, just a huntin' buddy? |

Docott. As we all know, Labs have that bred into them and it's in their genes to retrieve. It just takes a little work to get them motivated. I've heard stories of shelter dogs becoming good hunters with the right training. My lab Blaze, although he didn't come from a shelter is nothing special pedigree wise. But I can tell you he'll fetch any bumper/wubbas/tennis balls/ropes, swim and loves dock jumping. Now will he hunt? Never took him, but I feel if he sees a bird fall and hit the water, he'll go get it. I think once they get 1.5 or so, it becomes harder but I don't think it's impossible to train an older dog. Might just take a little longer. |

Good looking dog there. Sometimes people buy PB labs then things happen and they can't take care of them. Especially in this economy. Sad part is they don't care for their dogs well and that being one more mouth to feed, they are usually the 1st to go. Also I see no reason why strays aren't claimed by the owners. I do suggest that everyone with a dog get them microchipped. If by chance they are picked up by animal control, they can easily be identified and returned. Saving the owner alot of time and heartache, if you love your dog. |
